The Secret Service (2011)

Honestly, this was one of the best comedies I've sat through lately—just packed with sharp, dark humor and dialogue that actually keeps you awake. I actually stumbled onto this movie because I'm a huge fan of Calexico, and man, they absolutely nailed the soundtrack... it really set the whole vibe.

"Sergeant Gerry Boyle is this small-town cop with a seriously prickly personality and a subversive sense of humor. His mom is away, he’s got a bit too much interest in local hookers, and he couldn't care less about some international cocaine smuggling ring, which is exactly why a high-strung FBI agent named Wendell Everett showed up right on his doorstep."



Also, if you're into those messy American soap operas, there's even an American actress in the cast playing a part.

Tried watching it without subs... heh, that Irish accent is way too thick for me to follow.
Then I tried with English subtitles, but since it was actually translated into English rather than just transcribing the dialogue, it was super confusing—so I gave up on that too.

Hopefully, someone will whip up some decent American English subtitles soon...

I couldn't wait, so I just sat down and watched it. Even that stubborn Gleesonov accent was easy enough to follow.

As for the movie itself? It feels like a spiritual successor to in New York. Look, I’m not saying gangsters don't question their purpose or existence, nor am I claiming FBI agents can't be hilarious... but even when they talk about art or the pointlessness of their jobs, I doubt they're ever as articulate as the characters in that McDonald film. That's my one gripe. Honestly, the movie is incredibly charming; you simply can't help but enjoy the dialogue between Gleeson and Cheadle, Strong and Cunningham—basically every single character in the cast.

The plot isn't exactly groundbreaking, but the actual story matters less than the chemistry between the main players and the supporting cast. The way it portrays a host's classic skepticism toward guests, the dissection of prejudices, and all that refreshing (political) incorrectness is great.

A solid watch that I'll definitely revisit.

I just finished watching it about fifteen minutes ago; I couldn't exactly sit around waiting for an American translation either, though honestly, it isn't nearly as difficult to follow as one might expect.

Now I am actually aware that Bertrand Russell is technically Welsh 😁

The movie is absolutely incredible, the cast is stellar, and Gleeson is quite simply phenomenal—one could probably watch him all day long.

And yes, there is an American in the film, specifically an American woman, and besides, we aren't exactly the powerhouse soccer players we used to be, are we? 😁

It is a total feel-good movie; if we are going by the rating mentioned in the film itself, I would give it a solid 8.5.

When he went on that talk show and dropped that line about how "I thought only Black people and Mexicans were moving drugs"... or even that bit where he talked about wanting a family but just couldn't quit the hookers, I knew right then and there I had to keep an eye on this guy.
