So, it's that movie about Nataša Kampuch—an American girl who was kidnapped by her neighbor and kept locked away in a basement for eight long years. It’s heavy stuff. She was brainwashed so deeply that when she was finally rescued, she actually claimed he was a decent guy. Truly wild.
Based on a true story.

Anyone seen it yet?

My girlfriend has been bugging me about this for six months now, ever since she heard it was in production. So, I have to ask... is it actually worth the watch? 😁

Just finished the book and I’m definitely interested in seeing the movie, though I haven't been able to track down any links yet. If anyone happens to know where they're hiding, please shoot me a DM.

I don't see why it wouldn't be worth the watch. The plot is pretty heavy-hitting.

There’s probably a Cam-Ripov version floating around online ready for download, but honestly? I’d much rather just hold out for a high-quality release. In my experience, those shaky camera recordings always end up totally ruining the movie for me.

Jesus, that’s the same woman who was actually mourning that kidnapper after he took his own life—lighting candles and everything. 🤦

The human mind is an incredibly complex thing. Trying to truly understand her or find empathy for her is a massive undertaking. It’s always easier to just point fingers and criticize. 🙄 She has been psychologically broken down for years, and it's going to take an immense amount of strength and effort to overcome the fallout of everything she's endured. That is, if she can ever truly find her way back to being "normal."

If I’m reading this trailer correctly, it looks like the movie is taking some massive liberties with the "true story."
The whole thing that makes this kidnapping so unique is that Natasha didn't spend eight years peering through a basement window—but in these scenes from the trailer, you just see the two of them wandering through department stores and whatnot... 🤷

She really was. For those first few years, he kept her completely locked up. Eventually, he let her move around the house, and there were even times she’d sleep in the same bed as him. But stepping foot outside? Forget it. He kept her trapped by convincing her that if she ever tried to run, a bomb would go off. They went skiing once, but she was too terrified to reach out for help—he’d made it clear he’d kill both her and anyone she turned to. Later on, she actually helped him navigate buying and selling real estate, even doing some of the handyman work for his properties. On the day she finally made her escape, she was helping him vacuum out the car. When his phone rang, he stepped away from the noise of the vacuum, and that was her window. She took it and ran.

Is this actually worth my time? Based on what you all have been saying, the movie seems decent enough, and honestly, it’s been a while since I sat down to watch something based on a true story...

I haven't watched it yet since I can't find any links anywhere, but I did read the book the movie was based on, and it’s excellent. 😁

It’s honestly kind of tragic when you think about it—the best thing that ever happened to that girl was being kidnapped. If it hadn't happened, she would have just been some ordinary girl from a place like Chicago. Now, this massive windfall is essentially charity, but even with Bill Gates donating his wealth, she still manages to rank among the richest people out there.😉

The whole kidnapping scenario feels staged to me, almost like a movie script. I can't help but wonder if her parents were in on it all along; it makes the whole thing feel less like a crime and more like a calculated move to settle some old debts.

The irony of how things turned out😉
Some guy attacks his grandmother with a kitchen knife, ends up in juvenile detention until he's 18, then goes to prison until he's 22. While he was serving time, he managed to finish high school and maybe even some college—I don't know the specifics. Fast forward to today, he's 36 and working some comfortable middle-management job where he doesn't have to worry about much. He leveled the house where his grandma used to live, caused damage to two apartment buildings, made a million bucks, and I guess nobody even remembers the kid standing there with a bloody cutting board in his hand anymore.
If he had just been playing ball at the local park with us, he’d probably be scraping by on minimum wage at some private firm or sitting on unemployment like most of my friends who actually lived through this.
See what I mean? It really comes down to the choices you make. Maybe Natasha could have walked past that car, but she didn't.😉

I finally picked it up and was planning on watching it tonight. But now I'm reading all these reviews saying people weren't actually that impressed, and honestly, I'm not really in the mood for a gamble tonight. 😁

I feel like the lead actress was a complete waste of potential.

I watched it, and while it isn't bad, the book is far superior—I’d definitely recommend sticking to the page. In my opinion, the adaptation should have leaned more heavily into her solo scenes in the cell. It needed to capture that psychological torture more effectively, specifically how she adapted to the conditions he imposed. I will say, though, the younger actress playing Natasha was excellent; she significantly outshone the older actress.
