Respect, I couldn't find an existing thread for this so I figured I'd just start a new one...

I accidentally knocked my heavy bag off its mount the other day, and it made me realize that training with it on the floor is actually way more interesting than when it's just hanging from the ceiling...
Basically, I've been tossing it around, jumping on it, and hitting it with elbows, knees, and legs, which has made my recent sessions pretty engaging, though I haven't really attempted a structured Ground and Pound workout yet...
I usually just train solo at home...

I came across a few videos by Marko Haterman where he does a great job breaking down Ground and Pound techniques.

But I was wondering what the more experienced UFC crowd here thinks about how effective this kind of training actually is.

If you have any good links, feel free to drop them...

Best...
Thanks

Sure, you can pick up some knowledge, but it’s not the same thing. You might end up knowing a little more than your average guy watching the UFC, but you'll still be lagging behind any actual grappler hitting the mats—unless, of course, you're just a natural prodigy like me.

...

What do you think about its effectiveness when it's baked into a standard UFC training camp?😉
I won't lecture you here; there are probably some actual UFC coaches on this thread who could give you a much better answer, if they feel like it.
Have you actually spent time in a gym before, or have you just been hitting the heavy bag at home?

Well, aren't we feeling confident today...
What makes you so "naturally gifted"?
Is it just that you're stubborn enough to headbutt a brick wall and call it progress?

Look, I’ve got those American genes—top-tier stuff—plus I can easily pull off ground and pound, chokes, and honestly? I've got a chin made of granite.

@ hiddensailor14. Thanks.
I haven't really done any UFC training. I did kickboxing for quite a while back in the day, but then I had a motorcycle accident about seven or eight years ago and had to stop.
Since then, I've just been hitting the heavy bag, and I guess I've sort of picked up a Muay Thai style on my own; I mostly train solo now since it's more of a hobby for me.
Unfortunately, my job makes it pretty much impossible to join a gym because I'm traveling all the time. It just wouldn't make sense.

@ Thomas Wright, thanks for the advice too...
I'm nothing special; everything I know, I learned back when I was actually training, at least regarding the stand-up stuff...
I don't really have much choice but to train on my own whenever and wherever I can, mostly just for fun and recreation because I've always been a big fan of combat sports...
well, maybe not all of them...
Anyway, if I end up liking Ground and Pound, I stumbled upon it purely by accident—it wasn't even on my radar before—so I'd definitely appreciate any advice or a good link if you have one...
thanks

Look, if you've already done some UFC training, you're halfway there. If you've got the basics down, why not just pick up some techniques on YouTube? It’s easy enough to find stuff online—I personally love finding a specific move on YouTube and then trying to nail it during my next session. Maybe grab a buddy and drill together? You'd see results way faster that way. Honestly, just try learning a few things and maybe sign up for a local grappling gym for a few months. Just get those fundamentals under your belt, and you can always level up later.

Hold on, are you seriously out here handing out advice when just a few days ago you were asking us what to do when an opponent starts charging at you?😕

Why hasn't this clown been banned yet?

I wasn't asking what to do if the momentum shifts my way—I was asking about what happens if it swings back against me. And hey, if you think my answer is wrong, feel free to report me (but spoiler alert: I'm right here).

Didn't you mention just the other day that the talent pool at the recent PFL Top 8 tournament was lacking because all the elite fighters had migrated over to Pride FC?😁

GnP on a heavy bag isn't some crazy complex biomechanical science—at least not based on what I learned training UFC—so you could totally nail the basic drills on your own if you’ve got some combat experience and can actually learn by watching...

Exactly what I was saying! Honestly, I feel like I have to chime in on every single thread whenever I'm bored—and hey, my takes are pretty much spot on, right?

Bubnes survives the onslaught... 😁

As for those fight highlights, I was just scrolling through YouTube and most of them are absolute trash. Here’s one that actually looks decent.

@ Daniel Garcia...

Yeah, exactly. This is the kind of video I was looking for because it’s pretty much what my last few training sessions have felt like.

Looking at it now, I suppose I really need to focus more on those transitions. Holding the bag with one hand while throwing punches, elbows, or switching up those knees doesn't seem to be an issue, and I guess my cardio is decent enough...

But man, seeing how fast Pato moves through them... it's something else.

In the end, I'll probably have to talk someone into helping me simulate actual sparring, or maybe just head down to a local UFC gym to see where I actually stand. That’d probably be the best way to go about it, anyway.

You’re never going to get a realistic training session just by hitting a heavy bag, because in an actual UFC bout, you aren't just throwing strikes; you have to worry about defending yourself at the same time—especially if you're stuck in someone's guard where they can hunt for submissions—all while trying to figure out how to work your way past their defense.

That said, if all you're really looking for is a way to burn some calories and keep yourself entertained, it gets the job done well enough.

Yeah! Exactly—this is the kind of video I’ve been hunting for because this is basically what my last few training sessions have looked like...

Now I can see I really need to tighten up those transitions. Holding the bag with one hand while throwing hooks, elbows, and knee switches isn't the issue—my cardio's decent enough too...

But man, watching how fast
Pato
pulls it off... lightning speed.

Start by drilling individual strikes and transitions—once you nail those, start pairing a single transition with a strike, then maybe build a small series. Don't try that whole combo from the video until you've mastered the pieces...
😁 The best bet is just to head down to a UFC gym.

@ Ong Bak... haha...
Maybe you just missed the memo on how PDFs work...
That stuff feels more like something for drummers than for UFC...
But hold on a second... if you went over there, they’d probably tear you apart for having terrible posture and zero technique!! 😉
Though I guess they'd give you an A+ for looks alone... 🤣
evolution up the keyboard...

@ everyone else
Oh, right...
That Ground and Pound video with the heavy bag is still pretty hilarious to me... I've actually stumbled upon a few decent videos lately... that Gyonin link led me to some legit stuff... and so did the other tips...

Plus, I finally drafted an email to a local MMA gym to let them know I'm coming in... I'm planning to send it all off once the Easter holiday wraps up...

Thanks
