My apologies if this topic already exists somewhere else on the board. I’m curious about the actual process of becoming an actor—regardless of whether one aims for film or television. To be perfectly clear, my ambition isn't centered on chasing fame; I simply want to master the craft of acting itself, though I realize maintaining that distinction might be a bit of a pipe dream in this industry. I am also wondering which nearby states or regions might offer similar opportunities. As of now, I have absolutely zero experience, yet I've found myself increasingly drawn to this path over the last few years. Is there perhaps a specific corner of the internet—some sort of digital portfolio or platform—where directors and producers can actually discover talent and reach out to me? Furthermore, I don't currently have the flexibility to show up at local theaters to volunteer, assuming such things are even possible. I would be deeply grateful for any insight or advice you might be willing to share.

Anything is possible if you put in the work and actually have the drive. There are plenty of solid theaters all over the States—if there isn't one in your neck of the woods, you can always find some summer gig just to get your foot in the door and join a local troupe. You have to start somewhere. Trying to break into film right out of the gate is a brutal uphill battle—you know that—and very few people actually pull it off (think Rade Šerbedžija, Furlan, Višnjić, or Cvitešić). It’s hard to jump straight into something without any background, but honestly, it’s never too late if you're stubborn enough.

So, let me get this straight—is it actually possible to volunteer even if I don't have any prior experience under my belt? If the answer is yes, does every local theater troupe just open their doors to anyone with a passing interest, or am I looking at a more selective crowd? And here is the kicker: can someone who hasn't picked up a book in ages actually make the cut? I’ve heard whispers that you really need to be an avid reader to be taken seriously in this field, which is a bit daunting, to say the least. If that’s true, could someone please enlighten me on what exactly I should be reading? Honestly, if there is a specific canon or a list of essentials I need to tackle, I am more than willing to dive into whatever it takes to get my foot in the door.

I've heard you actually need to be a big reader—if that's true, is it possible to catch up? Or does anyone know which books I should dive into? Because if reading is the key, I'll read whatever it takes.

Of course you can. Who a theater decides to hire has nothing to do with your previous career—at least when we're talking about community troupes. You already know there are plenty of actors out there without formal training who still get the part. Most likely, you'll just have to show up for an audition, and if they like what they see, you're in—though that depends on the specific theater and the city you're looking at. As for the reading thing, I don't quite follow your question. Usually, they give you the material, and you're pretty much free to choose how you approach it. If you've got the talent and the charisma, they'll take you. You can always sharpen your skills over time if you actually put in the work.

If that's an option, do theater companies just take anyone who shows interest, even people who haven't really read much? I've heard you actually need to be reading, specifically that you need to be a frequentreader, and if that's true, could someone tell me exactly what that entails? Or does anyone know which specific plays or works I should look into? Because if it's necessary, I'll start reading whatever I need to.

You aren't using any checkmarks anywhere... so I'm honestly not sure if those bolded words are meant to refer back to the word reading....?

I meant "to read." My apologies for the oversight there; I’m typing this on my phone and I’ve become far too accustomed to the lazy habit of skipping accents while texting on these tiny screens.
