I've heard people talking about this flick before, but honestly, it totally slipped my mind until I stumbled upon it on the torrent sites today! I ended up grabbing it, so I'm planning to dive into it tonight—I'll definitely hit you guys up later or tomorrow to let you know if it actually holds up.

Premium Rush is a 2012 American action film. The film stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Michael Shannon, Dania Ramirez and Jamie Chung. Set around a bicycle messenger who is chased around New York City by a dirty cop who wants an envelope the messenger has, it was released on August 24, 2012, by Columbia Pictures and received positive reviews from film critics.

It looks pretty legit to me, and since the ratings are actually decent for this kind of genre, I'm really hoping for a good watch!

Just watched it today. Personally, I didn't think much of it. The only standout was Michael Shannon, who actually gave me a decent laugh, especially during the scene where he loses a tooth.

I was really hoping for a tighter plot and some much more intense bike stunts. What really killed the vibe for me was how goofy it got with the route planning while he's riding—like, where is he even going? It totally pulled me out of the moment. I went in expecting a gritty, serious action thriller, but this just wasn't hitting those notes at all.

All in all, it's a decent enough way to kill some time, but it's definitely bottom-of-the-barrel stuff.

But honestly? The plot is just way too thin for me. Giving this a 7 out of 10 feels like a massive stretch, right? The movie kicks off with JGL flying through the air and slamming onto the pavement, clearly having been hit by a car. Then we jump back about 90 minutes to see him grinding away at a bike courier job. He’s basically the king of his craft, though he mentions that without brakes or gears, it’s a death wish. He could totally land a high-paying office gig, but he’s just not about that suit-and-tie life; this adrenaline rush keeps him stoked. His girl does the same job, but things are a bit rocky between them right now. There’s also this Black coworker who’s eyeing her and thinks he’s got the edge. Honestly, he looks like a more ripped, fit cyclist, but we’ll find out later who’s actually faster. JGL gets tasked by his Jamie Chung friend to deliver a super important envelope, and he treats it like any other run. Suddenly, Michael Shannon pulls up right in front of his building asking for the envelope. JGL isn't handing it over, so he pedals like crazy while this guy chases him down in a car, basically trying to take him out...

It’s a decent flick, pretty cool and stylized. Like, when JGL is on a delivery, they show this bird's-eye view of the city layout and his route, kind of like Google Maps. Or when he hits an intersection and time freezes so you can see his options—one path is safe, the others are total death traps. Reminded me of that old Action man cartoon if anyone remembers that. It was a neat touch and didn't feel overdone, in my opinion.

The story jumps around non-chronologically, so you’ll hit a point where the timeline rewinds to show what a character was up to before or during certain events. It’s fine, I guess. Seems like they were trying to add some depth, but it doesn't really add much complexity. At the end of the day, it's just a standard action flick with a super simple plot.

JGL and Michael Shannon are awesome actors, but they don't have much to work with here, unfortunately. I feel like anyone else could've stepped into these roles, but it is what it is.

By the final act, I was totally checked out. It got pretty boring for me, even though the pacing is good and there's hardly any filler. The bike stunts and the chases are actually pretty well done, but I just couldn't stay hooked for those last 80 minutes. Plus, the premise is a bit goofy and unrealistic—those bikers weaving through New York City traffic would be toast in a heartbeat...

Watch it once and move on, a solid action thriller 6/10>

Look, I’d give it a minus for the idea and story, but a huge plus for the execution. As Patrick Martin pointed out, there's almost zero filler in this movie. JGL and Michael Shannon are big names and they do their jobs well. The chase scenes were decent, unlike that bike chase at the end of Bourne Legacy (now that was pure boredom 🙄)

It's a pretty recent movie that totally slipped under my radar (I don't even know if this actually got a wide release here in the States?) where JGL plays some guy on a bike working for a high-speed delivery outfit in New York City.
One day he gets stuck with this urgent package, and he's desperately trying to deliver it while some psycho played by Michael Shannon (who else would play a guy like that?) is basically trying to kill him just to get his hands on that crap inside JGL's bag.

The plot is pretty minimalist, featuring energetic editing and directing that occasionally feels similar to Run Lola Run (you know, switching from bird's-eye views to dolly shots and stuff). When there's actually a break in the roadside chaos, it's either some manic dialogue from Shannon or a video game-style breakdown of the action (like JGL is visualizing possible routes in his head and it shows up on screen as a graphic analysis).

So it doesn't come off as a total brainless flick (which wouldn't have been all bad, honestly), the story is chopped up into segments and told non-chronologically. You can easily get lost halfway through because of that, but luckily the story isn't super complex, so you catch up pretty fast by the end.

Anyway, fast pace, killer cinematography, awesome chase scenes through the streets, a totally unhinged Shannon, and a slightly goofy concept overall.
Basically a total blast. Good.

Watched it yesterday. Fun movie. It’s great right up until the halfway point, but once they start explaining why everyone is losing their minds over some paper with a smiley face on it, that frantic pace from the first 30 minutes just dies. And honestly (😁), it fails to hit those same heights by the end. Gordon-Levitt is decent, but Michael Shannon is incredible.

I actually took a bit of a tumble while watching this movie. Didn't think I'd be getting injured just sitting there watching an action flick. Honestly, it was one of the worse movies I've seen lately. Super predictable and boring. 🤷

Did I miss something here? How on earth did the brunette end up falling for that jerk (though, granted, he wasn't even her guy) 🙂?? There are definitely some plot holes, but it’s fine; the movie is solid enough for a 6. Just relax and enjoy the ride...
The people trashing this clearly don't get that it's meant to be pure entertainment. It seems like everyone is constantly searching for profound subtext or deep metaphors in every single film, but that's just not what this one is about 😉

It was actually quite an intriguing film, if I do say so myself; I found myself genuinely enjoying the experience. I suppose I’d settle on giving it a solid 8/10.

Movies like this are strictly for when you want to turn your brain off and just zone out. If you’re looking for anything deeper, it’s too predictable, lacks imagination, and gets pretty dull at times.

Bottom line: I'd recommend it only to people who are deathly bored or fans of the film's central theme.
