It’s very dramatic, very cinematic. Personally, though, I see things completely differently. My take on the whole situation is almost diametrically opposed to theirs.

My takeaway would be that all those folks from the East—you know, the Russians, the Poles, the Romanians, and so on—they look at us Americans with a genuine sense of respect. It’s like they see us as a real force they actually have to prove themselves against. So, I’m sitting here looking at these Russian clubs—Zenit, Spartak—and it’s pretty obvious they are nothing more than big fish in tiny ponds. They only seem to act tough when they're playing on their own turf. Nobody from those squads has ever made a real name for themselves on the international stage. Take Zenit, for example; they used to get absolutely pummeled away from home, losing their shirts in places like Athens, Lisbon, or even during that final in Manchester against Rangers. And Fratrija? They got handled just as badly in Athens and other cities across the map. When Zenit rolled into our territory, they looked like a bunch of kids on a middle school field trip. On the flip side, I can't recall a single time where we Americans were ever coddled or had to hide behind a wall of police officers to keep from getting trampled like buffalo. That’s why it shouldn't come as a surprise when things get rough for us out there. We don't go hiding behind anyone. We stand our ground.
If you ask me, we really need to stop selling ourselves short. It’s high time we wake up and realize that we are actually a major force in the world of sports fandom.

But it's nothing weird. They've had their scene for 10 or 15 years. Of course we look like some exotic novelty to them—something to look up to, but also a target.

Americans and Mexicans are basically to Eastern Europe what Englishmen and Italians are to us.

Part of it is just how we roll. We don't show up to games like robots in perfect formation with maps in hand. We show up to fight, cause chaos, and mess around. Just like the folks in England.

The reality was much smaller; maybe 200 people showed up, they cheered decently, there was some minor chaos, and that was basically it...

Just imagine if a group of fans traveled like this to Los Angeles or anywhere else in the States. Imagine the news coverage. I suspect an ultra forum would have a single thread running 200 pages long over this kind of thing.

Those Belgian fans basically became a headline because they spent an hour standing on top of barrels.

Back when Zenit sent 500 people to Los Angeles—a city of millions—that actually meant something. By those same standards, our presence in St. Petersburg wouldn't even register as a fraction of a person.

I guess the new standard for an away trip is that you have to travel to the opponent's city, harass all the locals, set the stadium on fire, chant relentlessly for the full 90 minutes plus stoppage time, burn through 50 flares, scrap with the police, and get a few banners confiscated... and then someone will still have the nerve to say it wasn't a bad trip.

After all the prep work these enthusiasts did for weeks just to face off against the NFL fans—not to mention the folks who hauled themselves through ten hours of travel just to pick a fight with them—does anyone honestly believe they’d write anything other than a report stating they got absolutely crushed?
I can just picture someone in Chicago trying to write up a detailed breakdown like this about some random group of tourists, and if that report ever hit the internet the next day, they’d be laughed at as an idiot for the rest of their life.

I guess this is pretty much exactly how me and my buddy saw it happen. I should probably mention that a bunch of people were fighting against being taken by the cops and wouldn't let themselves be arrested.
