My speakers just quit on me, and I'm stuck wondering if it's a driver issue or something else entirely...
I tested them with my MP3 player and everything sounds perfectly fine, so the problem definitely lies somewhere within the PC.
To make things more complicated, I actually ran into this before after I installed a new graphics card. Back then, the speaker icon in the taskbar had a red "X" over it, but once I reinstalled Realtek HD Audio, everything worked again. Now, I've gone through the whole process of installing the drivers properly, but they still won't work...

Those are just the audio drivers you're looking for, though you might need to dig around a bit more to get them sorted out; hopefully, someone will eventually step up and walk you through the whole process 🙂

Which motherboard manufacturer and model are we talking about here? Also, what's the deal with the Device Manager—are you seeing any yellow exclamation marks?

Motherboard: ASUS AliveDual-esata2 http://www.asus.com/mb/NVIDIA/ALiveDual-eSATA2/
And there aren't any yellow exclamation points or question marks showing up either...

So, I fired up my PC this morning and saw a red X over the speaker icon... it said the audio service isn't running

At this link, just click on the version of macOS you’re running, download them, and then get those audio drivers installed.
