So... I think the title pretty much speaks for itself here..

To give you a concrete example of what I'm getting at.. I've got this documentary broken up into six different 10-minute segments, and I was wondering if there's a way to stitch those six parts together into one single file—you know, so the whole damn documentary plays in one continuous go?

If anyone knows a specific program or even just some other workaround to tackle this, please feel free to jump in and help a guy out 😁

edit: Just realized I probably missed the mark and posted this in the wrong spot—this really belongs in the Software subforum, so mods, feel free to move this wherever it actually fits if needed

Fine. Let's split the credit: Windows Movie Maker.

You didn't even mention the video format (and even if you did, we'd be in the same boat...).
"Those things" don't usually work that way. You can't just expect one single program to solve everything the moment a need arises.

It is a classic, and frankly quite chronic, mistake when people ask for help; they simply fail to mention which video format they are actually dealing with.
If the file happens to be in .avi format, you might be able to join them using VirtualDub mod without needing to re-encode anything, much like how you could potentially use MpegStreamClip if you are working with an .mpg file.

7-Zip actually has a merge option too...

Since I’m a complete tech dinosaur—seriously, my computer skills are practically non-existent—could someone point me in the right direction on how to figure out which video format I'm actually looking at? 🙂 If it helps at all, I usually just grab everything from YouTube in MP4 format...

If you want to merge MP4 files without re-encoding, Boilsoft video Joiner gets the job done every single time. It’s super straightforward and perfect if you're just starting out, though you do have to pay for it. You can probably find some "free" version if you search on Google, but whatever.

Sigh... back to basics with a bit of a sad question here. What exactly is encoding? 😁

When you process video by changing its format, which inherently forces a codec change, you end up triggering a full re-encoding process that wastes a significant amount of time and inevitably degrades the visual quality. I suppose that is why some people prefer to seek out solutions that bypass encoding altogether, allowing them to merge or trim clips without actually touching the underlying data.

Well, I finally bit the bullet and downloaded Adobe Premiere Elements, and honestly? It’s running like a dream!

Thanks for all the help, everyone. 🙂
