The Descendants

There is really only one thing standing between this film and a perfect score for me. It’s Clooney. Honestly, his tendency to oscillate between those "I'm utterly bewildered" expressions and those "I'm just playing the fool" faces... it truly spoils the immersion for me.

Honestly, I found this one pretty underwhelming. It might actually be the weakest of the nine films nominated for Best Picture. For starters, Clooney just didn't click for me here; he felt a bit out of place in this particular role. The whole atmosphere felt a little flat, too. Given that I’ve navigated some similar family dynamics myself, I was really hoping for something that hit a bit harder emotionally, but nothing truly stuck with me. I will give credit where it's due, though—the soundtrack was solid and Shailene Woodley was great. All in all, it feels overhyped, predictable, and just a bit limp. If it weren't for the star power of Clooney and Payne, it probably would have been lost in the shuffle among all the other heavy-handed family melodramas out there.

Watched it the other night.
I really dig the soundtrack, and there's something interesting about the idea that living in paradise doesn't necessarily mean your life feels like heaven. The scenery is honestly stunning.
Klun was solid, too. I liked seeing that transformation; he isn't always playing the same old characters.
If they’d just tightened up the script or cut out a few of those tired clichés, this could have been a masterpiece. As it stands, it's just a good movie.

It’s some pretty solid drama, I guess. There’s a bit of humor sprinkled in here and there, which keeps it from being too heavy, though it definitely gets intense at times. I actually liked how they played with the contrast between that gorgeous scenery in Hawaii and all of Matt King’s personal mess—that restaurant scene was a nice touch. 7/10
