I was listening to them back during my Rainbow era. They were easily one of my favorite bands.

And while everyone else seems to idolize Ozzy Osbourne in Black Sabbath, you have to admit that Dio absolutely crushed it there too. Look, Ozzy is Ozzy—there's no debating that—but I don't think any other vocalist could have stepped into Black Sabbath and performed quite as well as he did.

In my book, Dio was the greatest replacement for an original frontman we've ever seen—he and Ian Gillan both stepped up perfectly when they took over for legends like Rod Evans. While I still think Paranoid is the absolute peak of Black Sabbath, Heaven and Hell is right up there with it. Honestly, I’ve never really been into Ozzy Osbourne's solo stuff; he just sounded so much better when the band was absolutely tearing it up with him.

Dio is hands down the greatest vocalist to ever do it. Personally, I don't think Ozzy Osbourne is actually a great singer; he’s just got a very specific sound that happened to make him famous, but that's about it. Dio, on the other hand, is on a whole different level 🙂 🙏

All I know for sure is that he’s just not the one for me!

Exactly. Ozzy and the rest of the guys—essentially Black Sabbath—were the pioneers. They were the first, the innovators, the literal newborns of heavy metal, and that is precisely why everyone respected them. I am certainly not saying Ozzy is bad; quite the contrary, hats off to him. However, Dio... it was almost impossible not to hear and notice a voice of that caliber.

Look, I’m not disputing his stature. There is absolutely no question about how much he influenced guitarists and music as a whole. However, without every single one of those legends you mentioned in your post, his music wouldn't be nearly as recognizable. Every single thing he wrote was elevated to a legendary level by those monster musicians, turning them into the classics we know today.
Those hits just needed a voice...🙄 Iron Maiden could have written just about anything, and if that maniac hadn't sung most of it, you can only imagine how massive they would be today.
Dio was the real deal; with a voice like that, he would have built a brutal career regardless of the circumstances.
Don't be so reductive about it.😉

Yeah. Metallica and Corey Taylor absolutely crushed it. That second half of the Metallica cover is pure genius.

Vocally speaking, everyone there just can't touch Dio, even if you consider guys like Halford, Maine, or Hughes aren't exactly at their absolute peak anymore. But man, the Scorpions were solid, and Metallica killed it with that medley. Biff did a great job too.

Honestly, I don't think Dio is some untouchable vocal god by today's standards. I was listening to his last few albums recently and he's basically running the same playbook—it's all the same stuff in one pot. I wouldn't overhype his vocals. He’s got the voice, sure, but is it actually smart, wide, or creative? My take: not really.

Personally, I’ve never come across a vocalist from any corner of the metal world who actually blew me away quite like Dio. He had this massive vocal range and an incredible sense of conviction; when he sang, you genuinely believed every single word coming out of his mouth. Whether he was tearing through a heavy track or handling a soulful ballad like "catch the rainbow"—he absolutely shined! Honestly, he’s the only singer besides Freddie Mercury and Ian Gillan (back in the 70s) whom I could actually picture stepping onto an opera stage to sing alongside a world-class diva.

The Dio era in Rainbow and Black Sabbath was killer, but mostly because the lineup behind him was insane—Ritchie Blackmore and Iommi were dropping legendary riffs and those tracks were absolute gold. Personally, his solo career doesn't quite hit the same heights as Black Sabbath or Rainbow for me, even if there are some gems in there. He sings great there too and the lyrics are usually interesting, but what kills me is the backing bands in the Dio band. To me, they always felt totally uninspired and lacked any real creativity.

So, the Dio band always felt like a bit of a slog to listen to. If I had to agree with your point, I'd say he was more the guy who stepped into the right spot at exactly the right time (like when Rainbow formed, everyone was just waiting to see what Blackmore would cook up next, or when Ozzy left Black Sabbath and fans were starving for something fresh). Just like how he crushed it in Rainbow, someone like Ian Gillan or David Coverdale could have done the exact same thing, like they did back in the day with Ritchie Blackmore in Deep Purple. Or in Black Sabbath, you had Ozzy or later Martin, who I honestly think is way underrated and actually better than Dio.

I never put Dio on a pedestal, but I'll give him credit for all the killer performances and those massive songs he carried, and mostly just for being a good guy with a huge heart. 🙂

It’s not terrible. It’s been two weeks since his passing anniversary, and the album in the link is just a compilation of tracks he covered—Halford, Motörhead, Metallica, Anthrax... you name it.
Looks solid on paper, but listening to it? It’s pretty mediocre if you ask me, even if it isn't a total disaster.

Four years since he left us. RIP.

Has anyone checked out that recent DVD/Blu-ray release of the 1993 Hammersmith live show? I finally downloaded it yesterday and started watching—man, it’s incredible. He sings like an absolute beast. People always give Tracy G a hard time because the solos on those classic tracks sound different live than they did on the studio albums, but honestly, he nails it.

This is easily one of his strongest moments, though if I’m being honest, I’ve always found myself more drawn to his work during the Elf / Rainbow era.
