SD card reader recommendations?

I could really use some help here. I’ve got this microSD card and a bunch of adapters. My laptop has a built-in card reader, but when I popped the adapter with the card inside into the slot today, absolutely nothing happened. It's just dead air. Any idea what the deal is? What am I looking at here?

Maybe you just don't have the drivers installed.

of course they aren't. I just didn't realize because I hadn't checked yet.
but my specific model isn't even listed on the official manufacturer's website, so I actually had to dig through some random tech forum dedicated to this laptop model just to find the right software to download.
