Moderators deleting posts: What's the deal?

Is there any way to tell which specific rule was actually broken when a post gets nuked?
The moderator's reasoning, in this particular instance, was basically just "your question was pointless."

My question is directly tied to the previous post. If that qualifies as off-topic or trolling, then so does the one above it.
