Oh, please. 🤣😂

I’m just not entirely sure if that kind of strategy would actually attract the masses—or drive them away. 😉

So, it’s finally happening 🙂 as part of the Film Noir Festival, we’re dropping the new issue of Variety! The theme this time is Slava Kurva—basically exploring prostitution in cinema from all sorts of angles and meanings. We’re also saying our goodbyes to Bele Tarar as a legendary director (while giving a nod to Tarar as the guy who kicked off the studio program in Miami!), chatted with plenty of interesting filmmakers from around the States and beyond, took a little peek inside the closet of J. Edgar Hoover, watched a bunch of new films, and even "borrowed" an article from Sight & Sound about a movie we can't wait to see hit our major US theaters... plus, we have a brand-new animation column that we’re actually pretty proud of 🙂

We’ve got a gorgeous new cover, too, and there will be a promotion at Velvet on Saturday, May 26th at 7:00 PM. But before that, on Thursday at 10:00 PM at the Central Park cinema , we’ll be watching some neo-noir {{Iris Mardešić}} together—she’s a dear guest here at Variety, and we had a really lovely chat with her in the last issue . So, yeah, swing by if you’re in the neighborhood; everyone is invited and more than welcome . 🙂 🙂

Yeah, apparently Imageshack can't tell the difference between fine art and straight-up pornography 🙂 so they banned it without a second thought. I guess Photobucket might actually be better 🙂

Man, I wish I could—really—but somehow it’s just not happening. You wouldn't think that from what I wrote above, but honestly? Finding the actual time to sit down and watch a movie properly is becoming a lost art. 😢
But hey, at least there's one silver lining in this whole mess, 🙂 and I'm actually pretty glad to see I'm not the only one still getting excited about this stuff. 😍

Just a heads-up—semi-formally, if you want to call it that—for whom it may concern: the new Filmonaut 14 has officially dropped 🙂

The theme this time around is Film and Autobiography. Basically, we explored how the personal gets translated onto the screen (think Jonas Mekas) and how movies can act as a way to settle scores with oneself, a form of therapy, or even a subtle micro-political statement. We sat down with some pretty fascinating people—including Loren Vigas, the director behind last year’s Venice winner From Afar—and hunted down those spots where cinema and fashion collide... plus, of course, there are reviews covering everything from current theater runs to our own personal favorites. We’ve wrapped it all up in a new design that’s much sleeker and actually makes sense—and we might have a few more surprises coming soon, though I won't say when just yet 🙂

You can pick up your copies at the usual spots: Europa Cinema, Vuković & Runjić (New York City), and the American Cinematheque (Seattle).

Send us your thoughts, as always 🙂.

Is there any way for someone living in Ottawa to get a copy of the new issue, regardless of which one it is? 🕺

It’s out. If I recall correctly, the last issue hit the shelves back in November of last year, right around the time of the ZFF.
