That's fine. I'm not even focused on whether people use profanity on Reddit or whatever.
But if typing in all caps counts as harassment and isn't allowed, yet Nex reacted the way they did, then apparently it is allowed. Is that actually normal communication?

So basically, you hand me a citation, and I snap back with: "What part of this do you care about?" That should be fine, right? And I wouldn't get banned for it, would I?

Well, to be honest, it really depends on where you're asking and what the context is
I mean, I think we’re all pretty sharp enough to tell whether someone is just messing around or if they're actually being offensive or aggressive...

Once again, Nex is just messing around. The guy doesn't even swear—at least, I can't recall him ever doing so.

Otherwise: yes, that counts as "normal" (meaning common, "average") communication. I don't know what kind of bubble you live in or what sort of people you surround yourself with—but in informal settings, people swear. It’s not my personal idea of a good time—I much prefer people who can express themselves without relying on profanity—but I find it a bit presumptuous to demand that the entire world bend to my specific preferences.

so you mean if you talk total nonsense to me, and I respond with "what the hell are you talking about?" that would be perfectly okay, and I wouldn't get flagged for it, right?

Under the forum rules, even if you wrote "what on earth?" or even something like "esteemed moderator, I must respectfully maintain that you are mistaken in this matter," you would still get flagged because you are commenting on moderation within the thread itself. 🙂

Actually, you'd still catch a card because you're debating moderation rules in the middle of a general discussion thread rather than in the dedicated Feedback Forum. It’s not about whether you used a phrase like "What the hell?"; it’s not about the insults themselves.🙄

Edit: Honestly, Nicholas King is hitting the nail on the head here. 😁

Edit 2: Are you actually lodging a specific complaint against someone, or are you just philosophizing about things in general, much like discussing world peace? 🙂

Honestly, I’m starting to doubt it. I’m beginning to think we might be dealing with some kind of automated system here—something capable of spotting those unique irregularities specific to each individual and fixing errors in record time.

You don't just start a conversation like that with someone you don't even know, let alone argue with them. You don't talk to a total stranger like that. That’s what you say to someone you actually know when you're messing around with them.🤷

Nimoy prompted this question by starting the thread, and then he got annoyed by the replies. Then Tupelo jumps in threatening to ban anyone else who keeps trolling, even though nobody was actually trolling. I've seen plenty of times where regular users start a thread, get upset by the responses, and end up getting banned because they overreacted to the comments.

But what I really don't get is why we aren't allowed to comment on forum moderation in the chat. I don't know about other chats, but for example, in the dating sub-chat, you can't even mention how someone should moderate the room. If it's a chat, people should be able to talk about whatever they want as long as they aren't badmouthing anyone. But even that gets you a ban immediately.

I find it a bit peculiar that someone with barely a year of seniority on this forum—and a mountain of posts to show for it—feels the need to categorize us users into those they know and those they don't, or those they chat with versus those they don't... not to mention labeling others as "strangers."
