Dealing with elderly dementia

Yesterday, I received some devastating news regarding my father’s condition—he is dealing with brain atrophy and dementia... I tried searching through the forum archives for any guidance, but I haven't had much luck finding what I need. If anyone could point me in the right direction to help me start gathering information about the disease and potential treatment options, I would be truly grateful.

I'm from Mexico. My mom is 62 and she’s been battling dementia for five years now. Right now, there are basically four main drugs used globally to manage it: Aricept, Exelon, Reminyl, and the newer one, Ebixa. Look, these meds aren't a cure—they can't fix the disease. They just slow down the decline. At first, they had her on Exelon, but it didn't do a damn thing. We switched her over to a combination of Tanakan (which is Ginko) and Cavinton, and honestly, she actually seemed to improve quite a bit. She stuck with that for about a year before things started sliding again. Around that same time, Ebixa hit the market, so we tried that for three years, and it worked well too. Currently, she’s on a mix of Aricept and Cavinton Forte. Her condition isn't great, but it’s not a total disaster either, despite some setbacks. Doctors say these drugs hit everyone differently. My advice? Find a top-tier specialist who can experiment and figure out which specific medication works best for your father. Every case moves at its own pace, but let's be real: the prognosis usually isn't great. Most importantly, you have to be patient and really try to understand what they're going through. Don't let yourself sink into depression. Your dad needs you to stay strong, keep your head up, and give him the best care possible. Best of luck.

There is no cure. You’ll find plenty of supplements out there claiming to help, but their actual effectiveness is highly debatable. I can't offer much in the way of advice, other than this: don't fall for those aggressive media advertisements promising "enhanced focus and memory." You'll just end up flushing money down the drain without seeing any real results.

I know you're going to want to try everything available to you, but please, don't get caught up in the hype.

And for what it's worth, Ginko isn't some magic fix for every ailment!

I’m from Canada, and my mother started showing symptoms relatively early—she was only in her 60s when things first began to shift. At first, we weren't even sure what it was; it looked like a mild case of depression, or so we thought, but it eventually spiraled into something much more severe, and she was ultimately diagnosed with dementia. She’s 70 now, and she’s reached that stage where she doesn't recognize anyone anymore—she just doesn't remember anything. I guess I'm the only one left who she still recognizes when I come to visit. We’ve tried so many different medications, though personally, I’ve come to feel that nothing really works when you're dealing with a disease like this. Everything seems to provide only a fleeting bit of relief before it's as if she becomes immune to the drugs entirely. Right now, we’re giving her some specific tablets that we source from Switzerland. In my opinion, all it really takes is an immense amount of patience and love; the medication is really just secondary support. Just... brace yourselves with plenty of patience. Good luck to you all.

My dear friends, I am currently 32 years old, yet my diagnostic reports tell a much older story—cerebellar atrophy, cortical atrophy, and atherosclerotic changes in the vertebral arteries... I have already completed a CT scan and a brain SPECT, and now I am waiting on an MRI and a Doppler study. Essentially, my brain scans look more like those of someone in their 60s, though, thank Bog, 🙏 I am still functioning quite well—albeit with some forgetfulness and a bit of mental fog here and there. 😕...As for how progressive this might be? Well, only time will tell, and I am truly hoping it isn't anything too severe... Regarding treatment, I am currently taking Ginko...
