In the book, it's also a boy

Wait, what exactly do you mean by that? Could you clarify a bit?

From what I understand, in the Swedish version, it’s still a boy and a girl—Kare and Lina—and their roles match their respective genders, so I'm not quite following your logic here.

Jeffrey Fisher61 said:what specifically and who are you referring to? Could you maybe explain that a bit more?

From what I understand, in the Swedish version, it's still a boy and a girl—Kare and Lina—and their roles match their respective genders, so I guess I don't quite follow your point.

In the novel, it actually explicitly mentions that he is a castrated boy.

In the film, a girl does play him, but they used a boy's voice for the character as well.

Besides that, there's a scene where you can catch a glimpse of a scar for just a second, though nothing is ever really clarified.

And in both movies, the character says they aren't a girl.

One of those rare movie moments where I actually had to blink... gross.

nimblewolf71 said:Interesting point. This might actually be the first movie in a series ever about a romance between a guy and a vampire where the girl is the vampire.

I don't buy it.
Most vampire flicks these days are just made for teenage girls, and they aren't really looking for guys who'd basically be total pushovers compared to their girlfriends. It's always more logical for them to go with a vampire guy and a regular girl.

Modern vampire movies are just made for teenage girls. They aren't looking for guys who are actually weaker than them... they just want some logic where it's always a vampire paired with an ordinary girl.

I don't know, I'd say Twilight is pretty much the only one made specifically for horny girls. Aside from that, there aren't even many vampire movies out there. Or maybe they just suck at marketing.

By the way, I don't get why you're attacking nimblewolf71 like that. Why don't you believe him? 🤷
Because you basically just agreed with everything he said! 😁

I watched this maybe a few months back, and honestly, I can barely recall much about it now, other than the general impression that some crazy Americans decided to remake the exact same movie, yet somehow it just didn't hit the same way... I feel like I remember practically every single scene from the original version...

Richard Wilson4 said:I actually enjoyed the movie, though I agree with a few people here—it would have been better if she turned him into a vampire instead of letting him just grow up.

My take on it was a little different, perhaps a bit darker 😁
She really ended up without any kind of "guardian," someone to handle the killing or look after her... and you saw for yourself how their relationship played out, there wasn't exactly a sense of love coming from her side. So... hmm, is it possible that this friendship with the Oscar winner is just her way of securing a new guardian for the next 50 years, or at least someone to help pull her suitcase around...

Plus, there's this one quick shot where you catch a glimpse of a scar, but the movie doesn't really elaborate on it.

And in both movies, the character clarifies they aren't a girl.

I think you're misinterpreting things—she says she isn't a girl because she's actually a vampire, in the sense of "I'm not a girl, I'm not even human."

Besides, IMDb lists the character as female.

Jeffrey Fisher61 said:You totally missed the point. She’s saying she isn't a girl because she's actually a vampire—as in, "I'm not a girl, I'm not even human."

Besides, IMDb says she's female anyway.

IMDb...🙄

In the movie, if I remember correctly, they never explicitly state that Eli isn't a girl. Then again, it's easy enough to figure out if you actually watched the film (the original, I mean) based on some of her lines. So it makes sense to conclude that Eli isn't an "he" or a "she," but just an "it."
Basically, a vampire, just like you said.

In the novel, Eli (which can be a unisex name) is actually a castrated male, and that's how it works in the Let the Right One in trailer too, though when Americans remade it, they renamed the character Abby and completely cut out that whole part about the castration...

I honestly thought vampires just had a demon where their junk should be; I never realized it was actually a castration scar 😲

Clearly you haven't spent much time with vampires. Not my cup of tea...

Essentially, just a vampire, just like you mentioned.

Okay, let's just agree that it is 😉

You're pretty much agreeing with what he said anyway! 😁

Man, I was actually agreeing with him.
He was asking if there are any movies where the girl is a vampire and the guy is just some normal dude:
And I was just like, I DON'T BELIEVE IT 🤷

She’s basically lost her "guardian," so there's nobody left to kill things for her or look after her... plus, you saw their vibe. It wasn't exactly love on her end. So... hmm, maybe this friendship with Oscar is just her way of securing a new guardian for the next 50 years? At least she'll have someone to lug her suitcase around for a while.
☕

you know I thought the exact same thing.
but I don't know, they just seem so good together. I don't want to believe it, though.

Man, you either gotta be a cynic or a romantic. You can't be both. 😉

Honestly, man, this is actually just a beautiful love story.
No sex, no action, no jokes—just pure vibes. I don't know what it is about this movie, but I’m honestly obsessed. There's something about how innocent everything feels, even when it clearly isn't. It's just a really, really good film.

So, I just finished watching the American version, but based on what everyone’s saying here, it sounds like I really need to check out the original. Personally? I thought the movie was fantastic. I truly felt like they were a couple, even if it was a dysfunctional, twisted, and honestly pretty heartbreaking kind of connection. But now I’m starting to second-guess everything. Is she just picking those guardians specifically so she can coddle him? Is she actually this massive manipulator? Because if so, man, that poor kid is doomed. In the American version, she heads over to the pool and takes out everyone trying to drown him. That implies she was tracking him the whole time just to swoop in and "save" him—which would be some seriously heavy manipulation. And here I was, actually wanting to believe in them...

It might be worth checking out the European version too. Personally, I enjoyed both versions quite a bit. Also, one little detail regarding the vampire character. The vampire character is actually male if you go by the book.
