The Beatles, the Velvet Underground, The Clash, Cream, Black Sabbath, Kraftwerk, Can, Faust, King Crimson, David Bowie—plus a handful of both modern and classic legends who essentially laid the groundwork for everything we hear in popular music today

The heavy hitters: The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Queen, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Pink Floyd, The Doors, Black Sabbath, King Crimson, AC/DC, Iron Maiden, David Bowie, Nirvana, Ramones, The Clash, and so on.

To put it briefly—classics and a whole host of others—whereas these newer acts... well, they might become some of the most influential ever, but for now, they can only potentially be influential toward whom? I have no idea. I’d love to see some actual examples. Not that I’m daring to say it out loud, but I find myself wondering 🤷

Nickelback and Creed are fine, but honestly, you might as well throw Puddle of Mudd into the mix too...

I’d argue that Queen actually carries more weight today than they did twenty years ago. In fact, they might be more influential on the musical landscape in general than bands like Black Sabbath or Deep Purple, who really focused their impact specifically on hard rock and metal. It feels like every time I turn around, someone pops up claiming Freddie and Queen were their biggest inspiration. I won't get too bogged down listing all the 80s acts they shaped—think Metallica, Def Leppard, Extreme, Guns N' Roses, and so on—because there's a massive wave of newer artists from the 90s through today who owe them a debt. We're talking everything from rock heavyweights like Muse and Foo Fighters to artists you wouldn't immediately link back to Queen, such as Lady Gaga, Mika, Scissor Sisters, Keane, or My Chemical Romance... they even left a mark on Green Day, despite them being categorized as punk or pop-punk.

I have to agree with this take... Queen definitely carries some serious weight... when you step back and look at the big picture, there's really no denying it.

I suppose I agree. Generally speaking, that wide-ranging influence—stretching from Metallica all the way to modern alt-rockers—comes down to the fact that they were constantly blending various genres and subgenres within their music.
