We don't fully understand the mechanism yet, but even that is enough for anyone with half a brain to consider.

There's also a correlation between colon cancer and eating meat too often.

Cigarettes, alcohol, etc., etc...

So? What's the move?

Smoking, drinking, whatever...

So? What's your point?

Your sense of irony is about as nonexistent as your grasp of basic grammar.

I guess I’ll just reiterate the golden rule for any kind of intervention on our body's largest organ:
Don't smear anything on your skin (or hair) that you wouldn't feel comfortable eating.

(since it all eventually hits your bloodstream anyway). I just caught a whiff of those branded dyes my wife uses, and honestly, it's probably a miracle she still has those hundred hairs left on her head...

Humans are pretty much mindless when they're high, so I suppose it doesn't even matter at this point.

Starting this thread because I need some advice, and preferably fast. 😁

Basically, I tried out a brand new hair dye last night—never used it before, totally untested—and now my scalp is itching like crazy. It’s been constant since last night. 🙂
I don't have any sores or bumps like people are mentioning elsewhere in this thread, but—it just itches!
I don't even have any coconut oil on hand like Patrick Young2 suggested. So what's the move here? How do I soothe this irritation?
I do have some almond oil; would that actually help?

I was thinking about taking an Allegra. 🤷

So, basically, I tried out this brand-new hair dye last night—something I’d never used before and hadn't even tested out—and now my scalp is absolutely driving me crazy with itching. It's been itching since last night. 🙂
I don't have any open sores or those weird bumps people talk about in this thread, but man, it just itches!
To top it off, I don't even have any coconut oil on hand, which is what Patrick Young2 suggested. So what am I supposed to do? Any way to soothe this irritation??
I do have some almond oil, though... would that actually help at all?

I was thinking maybe taking an Aleve or some Claritin might work. 🤷

That's actually a pretty decent first thought.
Your best bet is to wash your hair with lukewarm water—you know, just somewhere in that middle ground where it isn't hot or cold—using a gentle baby shampoo.
If it doesn't settle down soon, you should probably just head to the doctor tomorrow.

Washed and dried my hair about two hours ago, and the itching was relentless. It seems to have calmed down slightly, but I think I’ll take some Claritin anyway, just to be safe.
I only have some kids' shampoo on hand, but it’s loaded with milk proteins. Since I have a dairy allergy, that would be a total disaster.🙂 😁

Thanks for the quick reply.

Don't mess around with hair dye. I’m currently stuck in a hospital bed because of a bad reaction, popping Pronase and slathering Synoderm N on my skin while dealing with head compresses. My face is covered in rashes and my body is breaking out in hives. They’ve already done skin swabs and a biopsy. This stuff absolutely wrecked my system. Between the insomnia, the constant itching, the "hysterical" scratching, and my immune system tanking, my thyroid has finally decided to act up. I'm 32, and I've been dyeing my hair since I was 16. If I could go back sixteen years NEVER would I have ever touched hair dye, but hey, youth is wasted on the young. Take care of your hair and your health while you still have them; once they're gone, neither a touch-up at the salon nor a fresh bottle of color is going to fix it.

I’ve heard that peroxide bleaching is actually the safest route, whereas constantly dyeing your hair black can lead to bladder cancer issues.

I don't have any scratches or lumps like people were talking about in this thread—but it's itchy!!!

Wash your hair with some classic creamy Head & Shoulders.
That shampoo has keratolytic properties, so besides stripping the dye out of your hair faster, it also helps clear those allergens off your scalp.

My mom dyed her hair last night, and things went south almost immediately. She felt this stinging, painful sensation right as she was applying the dye. We rinsed her hair out after just a few minutes, but then the real trouble started. She’s been dealing with these intense headaches all night, and her scalp is incredibly red and inflamed. There are even these blisters forming that are oozing fluid... her whole head is starting to swell up and feels painfully tight. It's itching and burning constantly. Please, I need advice—every minute feels critical right now. What’s the best thing we can apply or do before we finally get her to the ER? 😢 😢 😢 😢

Try not to mess with your scalp too much... you don't want to cause scabs to form that might peel off painfully—could get pretty uncomfortable if they stick to the skin. It shouldn't be anything too serious, though.🙂 Maybe try asking at a local CVS or Walgreens about a good ointment or some oil instead.

That sounds like an acute allergic reaction. Honestly, there isn't much you can do at home besides heading straight to the Emergency Room. If you have some antihistamines on hand, she could take one, and maybe try some cold compresses, but you absolutely have to get her to a doctor immediately... these reactions can spiral and get way worse really quickly.

Oh my god, I am absolutely frozen after reading all of this. I literally just bought some L'Oréal Preference hair dye an hour ago, and since it’s my first time trying to dye my own hair at home, I’m totally spiraling. Now I have no idea what to do. 😢
How exactly am I supposed to do a patch test? Is that thing actually reliable?

To all the women here who have experienced similar adverse reactions—I truly hope you have fully recovered and are doing well now!
Does anyone know where I can arrange for patch testing regarding specific hair dye ingredients? I am looking for private clinics or specialized facilities in New York City, as my primary care physician hasn't been able to provide any helpful leads on this matter, which is why I am turning to this community for advice 🙄.
Additionally, is it actually possible to achieve significant coverage for gray hair using herbal preparations? I would appreciate hearing about any plant-based products you have personally found effective for this purpose.

Grace Davis77, look—take the exact color you’re planning to go with (like, the actual brand and shade, because they all react differently, obviously), mix a tiny little bit in a spoon, and dab it on the inside of your forearm in a spot about half an inch wide; just let it sit for thirty minutes then rinse it off with warm water (basically the same thing you'd do on your scalp). if it starts stinging like crazy, just wash it off immediately, duh. otherwise, wait a full 24 hours and see if there's any reaction at all. if nothing happens... then you're good to go, you aren't hypersensitive.

Starting a new thread here.
Does anyone know where I can actually get a reliable allergy test for hair dye?
