Where exactly is she sitting or walking? 🤷 Okay, maybe in Julien she did more sitting and walking, and honestly, I have no clue if she was being pretentious—that’s just how the role is written (though she still manages to pull off a whole spectrum of repressed emotions through it). That doesn't prove Chloe is a bad actress by any means.

She's young, attractive, and an established actress (an Oscar nominee, man), she's got her whole life ahead of her—so she probably isn't just going to sit at home😁

I watched Gummo, which is why I was rambling about it earlier, and if my memory serves me right, all those kids in the movie feel pretty... raw.

I’m not saying they shouldn't go out and live their lives, obviously, but look, I know she’s supposed to be this massive indie icon or whatever, though I personally haven't seen anything particularly special in her work.

It might just be that old "casting whoever" mentality when it comes to young actresses; honestly, I get the feeling there’s never been a better crop of young male actors in the USA, yet somehow we've never had fewer talented young women. But that's a whole other conversation.

I caught this movie last year, and it just occurred to me—what exactly am I supposed to be getting from this?

Personally, I consider this one of the most repulsive films ever made. It’s essentially cinema for deranged masochists. I watched it about two months ago, and I kid you not, within the first ten minutes I found myself asking, "WTF am I watching? Am I actually sane?" But since I have this stubborn habit of seeing every project through to the end, I forced myself to endure the torture just to earn my title as a complete masochist for the day. Honestly, it was the worst ninety minutes of my life. And people actually call this "art"? It is absurdity squared. Disgusting characters, a disgusting "plot," and nothing but revolting scenes. I gave it a 2/10 on IMDb, but I think I'll be revising that down to a 1/10.

Hands down, the best movie from the '90s I've ever seen.

I am 100% with you on this one. The movie is incredible—it captures that total sense of hopelessness and the feeling of having nothing left after a tornado rips through a town. All those characters with their own messy lives and flaws, plus that whole "aesthetic of ugliness"... it all hits you hard emotionally. I've seen it a bunch of times already, and honestly, I could probably watch it again down the road.

Some interview where they were discussing the film, and the host accidentally flashed a fake still from a bathtub scene. Korine absolutely lost it.

I actually really love Gummo—I ended up watching it twice back in 2009 when I was around 18. Just a little something I picked up during that phase! Honestly, this has to be the best trailer ever made—hands down! I remember seeing it for the first time back in high school and just being totally floored by it.A little masterpiece just for me—honestly, I'm loving this!

I saw it when it first dropped. Back then, we were just kids and the movie Kids was such a massive deal for all of us, so since it was the same director, we all went in expecting a total masterpiece. 🤣
Back then, it was a solid watch if you were chilling with a joint and just messing around, but if I tried to sit through it now? It would suck. Honestly, I doubt I’d even have the patience to make it through an hour and a half of that.

Actually, it isn't the same director. Korine only wrote the screenplay for Kids.

It won't. I recently sat through it twice myself—mostly for work, honestly, I wouldn't dare do it just for fun—and it actually feels even better now. Plus, looking back all these years later, Harmony seems like an even bolder (and smarter) observer than he did before. Gummo holds up surprisingly well—maybe even better than expected. 🙂

(Mind you, I'm from a slightly older generation than you, so maybe my tastes have become a bit more conservative? But regardless—or perhaps because of it—I found it a total blast watching how Harmony arrogantly takes swings at both American culture and the medium of film itself. Before, that "rage" felt a little forced to me; now, the whole thing feels almost more irrational than just taping bacon to a bathroom wall.)

Gummo is an incredible film.
I honestly think it’s a raw, honest look at life on the fringes—that gritty, lawless territory where kids grow up without any decent role models to look up to. That was exactly what we were seeing on screen.
You have to watch a movie like this with an open mind. If you go in immediately trying to set boundaries or judging what’s too gross and what isn't just to put it in a box, you miss the point entirely.

What do you mean he isn't the same director? I just checked his IMDB. We all watched those films specifically because of Larry Clark.

Korine directed Gummo, while Larry Clark did the Larry Clark Kids. Just a heads up—Korine actually wrote the script for Kids, but Clark didn't have anything to do with Gummo.
