Greetings to everyone on the forum.

I finally bit the bullet today and bought a dedicated USB cable for my Canon MP540, since the manufacturer—in their infinite wisdom—decided not to include one in the box.
The issue is this: I’ve gone through the installation wizard, and while it claims the drivers were successfully installed, everything falls apart when it reaches the stage where I'm supposed to connect the printer to my PC. My computer simply refuses to recognize the device; there's zero communication happening. I get a notification saying new hardware was detected and that the drivers are all set, but clearly, that's just wishful thinking if the system won't actually talk to the printer. I'm running Windows XP Professional SP2.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

So, I went out and bought a cable for my Canon MP540 today (since the geniuses who made this thing didn't bother including one in the box).
The thing is, once I get through the driver installation wizard to the part where I'm supposed to plug the printer into the computer, nothing happens. The PC just won't talk to it. I get this pop-up saying new hardware was found and drivers were installed successfully, but obviously, that's useless if there's zero communication between the machine and the PC. I'm running Windows XP Professional SP2.

Any help would be appreciated!

I actually just set up the exact same printer/all-in-one yesterday.
Installation went smooth as silk for me. I just followed the manual step-by-step. Honestly? Try starting the whole installation process over from scratch. And don't forget—before you even touch that installation CD, make sure the printer is turned off and the USB isn't plugged into the PC yet. You aren't supposed to turn the printer on until the "wizard"
actually tells you to connect the USB cable.
If the PC still doesn't see it after that, you might have a dead USB port on your rig. Like I said, everything worked fine for me on
Windows XP SP2.

Give another USB port a shot.

I’ve got an older Canon myself, and the setup process is pretty much identical.

Here’s how you do it:

First, go ahead and wipe the slate clean—uninstall and delete all existing printer profiles.

Then, pop in the installation CD and kick off the installer.

When you hit the step asking you to connect the hardware, turn the printer on first, then plug in the cable.

Just hang tight for a few minutes. The system actually starts finishing the installation in the background on its own, which feels a little weird.

By the time you realize what's happening, you can just cancel the main installer since everything is already sorted out in the background.

Thanks to everyone for the input!

I actually managed to sort out the issue on my own, almost immediately after I posted.
It might sound a bit unconventional... 🤷
Basically, if I plug the cable into the printer first and then connect it to the USB port, the computer fails to recognize the device. However, if I reverse the order—plugging the cable into the USB port before connecting it to the printer—everything works perfectly.
I generally only hook the printer up when I actually need to run a print job from my laptop.
