😛🙂I’ve got a bit of a problem... the skin on my fingertips—specifically the pads—keeps cracking. It feels just like when your heels get those deep, painful cracks, you know? And man, it really hurts. I guess I'm just being stubborn because I'm pretty hesitant about actually going to see a doctor. I was wondering if anyone else deals with this, and if so, what have you guys done to fix it? 🙂

It would be smarter to go see a doctor... it could even be diabetes

It could also just be dry skin. Back when I spent years working with turpentine, oil paints, and acrylics, I went through the exact same thing—my nails were completely splitting and the skin on my fingertips was constantly cracking, sometimes even bleeding. Please take care of your hands and use plenty of moisturizer, but you should definitely check in with a doctor just to make sure it isn't something more serious.

James Sanchez, how old are you now? For me, it was a nightmare every single spring and fall throughout my entire puberty. I couldn't get anything done. I’m a full-grown adult now, though :-) and I haven't had any issues for years (I work in a lab, so I'm constantly using my hands and there's no turning back). Back then, I used to avoid detergents at all costs—they really seemed to trigger everything. Do you bite your nails? Looking back, I wondered how much that actually played a part (even though I never officially sought help, I know what people mean when they say they're "difficult" for a doctor. Only two departments would even see me—psychiatry or pathology—and I usually ended up there against my will, though nobody asks for my input anymore :-)).

Yeah, you might want to try some St. John's Wort oil—it’s a blend of olive oil and hypericum, and it really helps speed up healing. You can pick it up at any local CVS or Walgreens, though you could make your own if you had the right herbs on hand (but it's probably too late in the season to forage now). I don't know for sure if it'll work for you, but it definitely won't hurt. Honestly, I didn't even hear about that stuff until a few years ago; back when I was dealing with those same breakouts, my mom only ever swore by Neosporin.
