Dawn of the Dead (2009)

I was debating whether to toss this one into the "film with edge" thread, since it fits the vibe perfectly. But then again, considering how unique this project is coming out of our neighbors to the south—an action-horror zombie flick from Mexico—I figured I’d just start a new thread for it. Not to ramble, but here’s the deal: it’s directed by Milan Konjević and Milan Todorović, with Miroslav Lakobrija handling the makeup. They even snagged some international names like Ken Foree, the legend from George A. Romero's cult classic "Dawn of the Dead," and Kristina Klebe from the Rob Zombie remake of "Halloween." It's a co-production between the US, Italy, and Spain, and people are already calling it half "Dawn of the Dead," half "Assault on Precinct 13." The rest is still under wraps...

The horror flick "dead zone" features an ecological disaster that turns the residents of a small US town into zombies. Writer Milan Konjević is teaming up with Milan Todorović to direct this story where a chemical leak causes a fatal mistake, turning locals into the living dead!
Since a prisoner transport happens to be passing through at the same time, FBI agents find themselves forced to team up with a mysterious and dangerous convict to survive. Miroslav Lakobrija is on makeup and special effects, and filming is set to kick off this spring in various locations around the US, featuring a cast including Dragan Nikolić, Voj Brajović, Miki Krstović, Goran Daničić, and more.

Vukota Brajović from the production company "Talking Wolf" mentioned that through Italian producer Loris Kurči, they secured Ken Foree, the actor famous for his lead role in George A. Romero's horror classic "Dawn of the Dead" (1978). Foree also made a brief appearance in the 2004 remake of "Dawn of the Dead."

- Foree will play one of the leads in "dead zone" thanks to these international producers. Honestly, if we tried doing this on our own, we wouldn't stand a chance. This partnership is exactly how we landed Foree, and we're even looking at bringing in an actress from Italy - Brajović noted.

The producers are pitching the film as "a pure genre horror, an attempt to use the zombie paradigm to shine a light on the growing dangers of environmental pollution".

PLOT

FBI agents are transporting a high-risk prisoner right when a chemical spill hits a small town, triggering a massive zombie outbreak. It turns into a desperate fight for survival filled with gunfights, running for your life, and plenty of blood. Who makes it out, who gets bitten, and who actually gets eaten?

A police-escorted prisoner transport supervised by the FBI sets off toward Mexico City. The route leads the transport through Pancevo, where they encounter an ecological disaster and infected people who are trying to kill them. FBI agents Mortimer Reyes (Ken Foree) and Mina Milius (Kristina Klebe) soon realize that their only chance for escape from the zombie hordes lies in allying with the dangerous, mysterious prisoner.

The last one (Land of the Living Dead) was actually pretty decent, so I might give this one a shot too. Even if they all seem to follow the exact same formula eventually.😁

Yeah... hehe... just another one... except since this is an American production, it's a bit different from the rest.😁👍 After seeing stuff like this, you can't help but wonder... why aren't we capable of making something like this ourselves?🤷

All they ever know how to film is drama. Even when they’re trying to shoot a comedy, they somehow twist it back into some heavy-handed drama. Pffft. It’s like they just don't have an ounce of imagination.

Heh, yeah... clearly our directors lack the talent for this kind of thing.
A Mexican version of the living dead... hmm... there could actually be something interesting there.😁 Especially if it's a low-budget production.

About two weeks ago, our little group of Cleveland cult film enthusiasts headed out to the Beacon, where we managed to catch the press conference and pick up some behind-the-scenes insights from the production.

I have to give a huge shout-out to Konjević and his entire crew. It’s honestly impressive how they took a low-budget project and transformed it into something that looks significantly more expensive than its actual price tag!

And man, you really have to tip your hat to Lakobrija; the guy is a total standout! 🙏 We’re genuinely proud that he’s already made two separate trips out here to visit us in Cleveland!😉

Wait, wasn't the last movie in that series Diary of the Living Dead? Plus, Romero also teased a new entry in that franchise... you've got the British guys with their sequels to 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later, and then there's that Dead Set series. Honestly, the whole zombie theme is definitely starting to feel a bit played out...

Yeah, you've got a point.
I haven't been paying close enough attention to every single zombie flick listed on IMDb.
That one was the only one that stuck in my head. 28 Days Later isn't bad, but I actually haven't even sat down to watch 28 Weeks Later yet.

The only one that really stuck with me was that bio one. 28 Days Later is decent enough, but I still haven't even gotten around to watching 28 Weeks Later.

Anyway, it's definitely an upgrade over the Resident Evil series—forgot to mention that earlier—and honestly, it feels like the Brits showed Americans how these movies should actually be done, even if they still pull a few ridiculous stunts here and there. It’ll hold up over time... not a bad flick.

I actually think Resident Evil is pretty decent for a change of pace. I still haven't sat down to watch the third installment, though.
But if you really step back and look at it, the whole franchise is basically just reinventing the wheel, which doesn't mean we aren't going to sit through it anyway.
