I really love how they stuck strictly to prime lenses for this film 🙂 since I already have a 200mm 2.8 L and a 135mm 2 L in my kit, I definitely need to pick up the rest of them 🙂

Honestly, this really isn't the place for this kind of thing. And don't even get me started on that obnoxious title (Canon EOS 5D Mark II)... give me a break.

I’m not sure how closely you all follow the latest shifts in the Photography market, but this specific camera has been the center of almost every conversation over the last few months. It represents a massive leap forward in bridging the gap between stills and video—truly a game-changer. And please, let’s not get carried away with the cynicism; 🙂 come on people, try to show a little enthusiasm instead of all this constant negativity 😉 I love you all 😁

Killer movie. Honestly, probably the best amateur production I've seen in years! And they did it all on a still camera.

Just to clear up any confusion—this camera actually shoots FULL HD video (1920 * 1080p @ 30fps), so we aren't talking about stop-motion or some other gimmick here 🙂

In fact, that specific feature is exactly what sparked a total revolution among indie filmmakers. You end up with high-res digital shots at basically nothing compared to the insane price tag of professional cinema rigs and lighting setups.

That exact feature is why indie filmmakers basically started a revolution. You get high-res digital shots in 2K for next to nothing compared to the insane price tag of a pro cinema rig and lighting setup.

True enough. The cost is peanuts compared to the potential. So, how big are the cards it takes, and what's the file size for just one minute of 2K footage?

We ended up burning through about 60GB of storage using a mix of 8GB and 4GB cards. You can toss in those massive 100GB cards—the camera handles them just fine—but you're still hitting that 4GB file size limit, which means your longest continuous shot tops out at roughly 12 minutes.

Between all that, we’ve got nearly 200GB of raw footage for a four-minute short film.😁

I'm with him on this. Those night shots are killer... they're exactly how I picture the vibe for a project I'm planning to shoot. It's all set at night, and I really want to capture that specific NYC atmosphere—those bright lights against empty streets. This is spot on... Michael Mann👍🙂

What does a setup like this run you? I'm looking at picking up an HD digital camera and dropping about 10 $0.00 on it, so I'm wondering what you think works better... a dedicated camera like this or just a decent camera in that price range?

They’re saying it’s about $2,699, which is basically a month's rent in most US cities!

The Canon EOS 5D Mark II officially retails for a bit more than $6.00 (MPC).
A basic kit of prime lenses—specifically the 24mm, 50mm, and 135mm—will run you about $12.

So, you're looking at roughly $18 total if you're trying to chase down a look similar to the one in the film Free 🙂.

Hmm. It is certainly true that you can pick up a fairly decent HD camera for that kind of money, though you have to keep in mind that it won't come with a lens included... 🙂
