Adult film production (2008)

I noticed there wasn't a thread for this yet 🙂

Anyway, the best comedy I've sat through all year... I was secretly hoping Pineapple Express would be better, but this one absolutely blew it out of the water... Not that it matters much, since Seth Rogen is in both... It's directed by Kevin Smith, the guy behind Dogma, Clerks, and Chasing Amy, and I won't spoil too much of the plot... 🙂 Two friends run out of cash and decide to get into adult film production—which makes sense, considering how Paris Hilton is still out here hawking perfume despite being completely out of it 🙂

The rest of the cast features the brilliant Craig Robinson from The Office, the lovely Elizabeth Banks, Jason Mewes, aka Silent Bob, aka Lester the Molester Cockenschtuff, among many others...

I've uploaded the American subtitles to the usual sites, put a lot of work into getting them right, and honestly, there's nothing standing in your way from enjoying this movie...

The movie is totally unremarkable.

It’s just a relentless barrage of profanity, toilet humor, and a few adult film production scenes designed to parody the genre... honestly, it's pathetic. The more I dwell on this film, the less I actually enjoy it.

I expected significantly more from Smith, though I can't quite pinpoint why I held those expectations, especially given the direction of Clerks 2.

By the way, Mewes plays Jay, not Silent Bob. Silent Bob is Kevin Smith.

And Seth Rogen is exactly the same as he was in Knocked Up... while I find the actor likable enough, he's just too repetitive for it to stay interesting, at least in roles like this.

What disappointed me about Smith was his failure to properly utilize the Tape Lords angle, unless he only included it as a cheap gag because the actress had a background in adult films.

You mentioned you handled the American translation for the subtitles... if that's the case, good job. There are a few errors here and there, but it's generally solid work.

I don't know about everyone else, but for me, there is nothing worse than that revolting feeling during the last five minutes when you're just desperately waiting for the credits to roll.

Don't get me wrong—the movie isn't total garbage, but it certainly isn't good either.

First off, my apologies regarding Silent Bob and the mix-up there; I know he's Jay, but I was a bit tipsy when I originally drafted this post 🙂

Secondly, I handled the translation myself, so please excuse any slips—I was essentially translating by ear and timing each line manually since I couldn't find a single set of subtitles that actually lined up perfectly... 😢 As I mentioned in the subtitle description, there are imperfections, but I gave it my best shot...

And finally... I personally think this comedy is brilliant; I just can't help myself when it comes to this specific brand of humor 😁

For me, the absolute highlight of the movie has to be that guy with the incredibly deep voice—you know, the one dating the rugby player. You can tell just by the resonance of his voice that he’s got real presence; he carries himself with such confidence and isn't afraid to own who he is.

And for what it's worth, the humor actually has some substance to it, unlike the mindless stuff you see in most American comedies these days... well... I won't bother trying to explain further...

I finally caught it today. Honestly, nothing special about it—there isn't a single intelligent bone in this movie's body. 5/10

Alright, just finished watching it and honestly... what can I say? The movie is damn good. Smith really knocked it out of the park here. This is easily his best work behind the camera yet.

The reason it stuck with me is because it actually functions on multiple levels. It’s not just some mindless sequence of cheap gags and shitty jokes—though, okay, one joke is definitely pretty terrible—like a lot of recent R-rated comedies you see lately (think > or >). Sure, the crude humor is there, and you get those classic Smith-style bits, but what actually elevates this (at least for me) is the romance between Zack and Miri. Thanks to how Smith directed it, the love story is genuinely beautifully told (once you hit the love scene, you'll see exactly what I mean). In reality, almost all of Smith's movies (with the exception of >) are basically just love stories disguised by a layer of "fuck" and "shit" jokes.

Bottom line: it’s probably not the best choice for a first date since things could get awkward, but it's perfect for people who have spent years in a platonic friendship before finally hooking up.

I gotta say, I loved this one too, but let’s be real—I’m a massive Smith fan, flaws and all (and yeah, I mean the flaws in his movies), so I probably can't even be objective about it.
The movie just left me feeling really good, you know? Like, I don't even know what else I could've asked for from a flick like this. 😁
The plot is solid enough, but honestly, with his stuff, I barely even pay attention to the story. It's the dialogue where he really shines, and man, in this one, it was pretty much top-tier. 🙏

Basically, if I’m putting it on my "all-time list," I’d slot it somewhere right after Chasing Amy and Clerks, which I still think are his absolute best.

btw that scene where Zack and Miri are hooking up is awesome, mostly because the song playing in the background is just incredible. In case anyone's looking for it: LIVE - "Hold Me Up"

I honestly think this might be one of the greatest comedies ever made; there’s just something about the way it all unfolds that feels pure genius to me. There is this one scene, which is just incredibly sweet, where they’re playing "Hold Me Up" by Live, and you can see them trying so hard to act all cool and boastful about it 😁 But hey, if nothing else, at least I walked away from the movie having discovered that band, Live.
