It’s not even that the Apatow hype is dying down, it’s just that there isn't enough Apatow in the balloon to begin with.
Honestly, I'd bet my life that "Funny People" is going to be one of the absolute best movies of the year.

Ryan Roberts2 said:The movie is anything but trash. The script is actually smart and funny. Sure, it leans on clichés, but they feel intentional. If your idea of peak comedy is something like *Zohan* or *Guru*, then you're honestly beyond help...

Pineapple Express is one of the best comedies out there, period.

Look, I don't care what you consider "peak comedy." Truly. As for the genre itself, I don't watch much comedy, so I’ll just take the consensus at face value. And the majority here is saying it sucks.☕

Joshua Jones97 said:they hyped him up way too much—honestly, the movie was just mediocre at best.
The whole Apatow hype bubble has definitely burst, and let's be real, if Seth Rogen and that little stout clone of his from Superbad weren't working with Apatow, they’d probably be flipping burgers at McDonald's right now.

😂 You hit the nail on the head there!

I just finished watching this movie and honestly, I thought it was pretty decent. I definitely had some good laughs out of it. There were some solid jokes and funny situations, though if I’m being totally honest, I felt like the plot could have been tightened up a bit—just a tiny bit. It's a great concept and feels like a genuine indie flick😁, so overall, I'd say it's worth a watch.👍

That's true enough... 👍

Just waiting on Zack and Miri now...

Is it just me, or is this whole Apatow clan slowly circling the drain? It feels like every new project they put out is just a diluted, less inspired version of what they used to do. It’s like watching a once-great steakhouse gradually transition into a mediocre chain restaurant—you remember when the quality was top-tier, but now it’s all just repetitive filler. Is anyone else noticing this decline, or am I just being overly cynical?

It’s been quite a descent, hasn't it? We went from the awkward, cringe-inducing energy of *40-Year-Old Virgin*, through that whole mess involving *Knocked Up*, then tumbled down into the absolute bottom of the barrel with those forgettable duds like *Superbad* and *Forgetting Sarah Marshall*. And now, we find ourselves staring at something nearly inconsequential like *Pineapple Express*. It's a slippery slope, really.

It’s the same tired cycle of amateur actors rotating through every single role like they’re stuck in some low-budget community theater loop. The plot? Utterly tedious. It drags on without any real momentum, and don't even get me started on the "inside jokes." If you aren't part of their tiny, insular circle, those forced little bits of humor land with all the impact of a wet paper towel. It's lazy, uninspired filmmaking.
The only thing I truly cannot wrap my head around is how these films consistently manage to snag such glowing reviews on IMDb. It’s baffling. And don't even get me started on why the critics insist on crowning them as some sort of "new wave" of American humor. It’s absolute nonsense.

It’s an absolute travesty. A complete and utter failure on every conceivable level. To witness such a catastrophic breakdown in performance is, frankly, exhausting. It’s much like watching a high-stakes game between the Dallas Cowboys where the defense simply forgets how to tackle—you sit there, staring at the screen in disbelief, wondering how professional athletes can be so fundamentally inept. One moment you have hope, and the next, you're left picking up the pieces of a shattered expectation. It is nothing short of a disgrace.

Ugh, *Pineapple Express* was such a massive letdown. It felt like someone tried to take that classic Cheech & Chong vibe and transplant it into California, but they stripped away all the actual humor and left us with nothing but a hollow imitation. It’s frustrating when a film tries to lean on a specific subculture or aesthetic but fails to deliver even a single decent joke. Just a total waste of time.

I suppose they’re all getting better... though perhaps it's just because humor is such a subjective, fickle thing, much like knowing a guy who thinks "The Love Guru" is the absolute pinnacle of comedy 🙂

Hannah Vaughn4 said:Is it just me, or does it feel like the Judd Apatow dynasty is steadily losing its grip on quality with every new release? It’s almost as if the well is running dry, one movie after another.

It’s quite a trajectory, isn't it? We move from the awkwardness of *40-Year-Old Virgin*, through the chaos of *Knocked Up*, then slide into the cringe-comedy of *Superbad* and that somewhat forgettable *Forgetting Sarah Marshall*, only to eventually land on the almost entirely overlooked *Pineapple Express*.

It’s the same old tired rotation of amateur actors, a plot that drags its feet through the mud, and a reliance on those insufferable inside jokes that only the people in the room actually find funny.
I find myself perpetually perplexed by one specific phenomenon: how on earth do these films manage to secure such glowing reviews on IMDb? It is truly baffling. Furthermore, I cannot quite wrap my head around why critics and enthusiasts alike insist on crowning them as the "new wave" of American humor. It feels less like a genuine cultural shift and more like a collective lapse in judgment.

It’s a heavy word, isn't it? "Lose." It carries a certain weight that most people try to gloss over with platitudes about "learning experiences" or "character building," but let’s be honest—losing simply feels like a gut punch. It’s the sudden, jarring realization that despite all your preparation, all the late nights, and all that misplaced confidence, the outcome wasn't yours to claim. It reminds me of watching a championship game where the underdog plays the game of their lives, only to have it snatched away by a single, inexplicable error in the final seconds. You can analyze the tape until you're blue in the face, dissecting every tactical blunder like a surgeon, but the scoreboard doesn't care about your intentions. It’s cold, it’s clinical, and it’s deeply unsatisfying. We spend so much of our lives curating a narrative of success, building this polished version of ourselves for the world to see, that when we actually stumble, it feels less like a setback and more like a fundamental flaw in the architecture of our identity. But perhaps there's a strange, quiet utility in it. If we never tasted the bitterness of a loss, would we ever truly grasp the texture of a win? Probably not. It’s an uncomfortable truth, but one we have to reckon with.

Ugh, *Pineapple Express* was such a letdown. It feels like someone tried to replicate that classic Cheech and Chong vibe set in California, but they stripped away all the actual humor and left us with nothing but a hollow shell. Everything else about it was fine, I suppose, but without the laughs, what are we even doing here?

I wouldn't go so far as to call them masterpieces, though I’d say the films mentioned are perfectly serviceable. That said, if we are talking about true gems, *Superbad* and *The 40-Year-Old Virgin* are absolutely stellar in my book. As for *Pineapple Express*, I haven't actually sat down to watch that one yet.

I am certainly not making the claim that these movies are objectively terrible; it is simply a matter of personal taste.

That specific brand of humor just doesn't resonate with me—honestly, it starts to feel incredibly repetitive after you've sat through the first couple of entries in a franchise.
Perhaps I would have viewed the Judd Apatow filmography through a much more critical lens had there not been such an absurd amount of unearned hype surrounding his entire body of work.

In my estimation, Superbad is an absolute masterpiece... Pineapple Express is significantly inferior by comparison, though I will concede it stands as one of the better lightweight comedies we've seen lately.

Honestly, you’d probably need to be high as a kite just to find this movie remotely amusing—and I mean talking heavy-duty hallucinogens where you’re seeing white mice tormenting black cats kind of stuff. Now *that* would actually be funny.
A total train wreck from start to finish... I mean, what was even the point of this thing????
It isn't funny, it isn't engaging, and frankly, does it even have a plot or anything at all???
Since I wasn't tripping on any substances, I managed to force myself to sit through about 30 minutes of it, but trying to watch anything further truly felt like a waste of life.
It feels like a handful of buddies grabbed a camera, filmed a few scenes that were clearly only funny to them, and then threw it all together on an old Windows 95 machine with practically zero processing power 😕
And to top it all off... how on earth did this movie manage to scrape a 7.7 rating on IMDb?

BTW, I thought Superbad was great, 40-Year-Old Virgin was alright, but I haven't seen the others ☕

It’s neither funny nor interesting, and frankly, I couldn't tell if there was even a plot or what the hell...

1. Go ahead and take a shot at it..
2. Take another shot just in case you survive the first one..
3. Maybe try watching the whole thing next time before commenting...
4. Tell your brother to take a shot at you too, since I clearly missed my mark the first time...

I don't own any firearms, and honestly, I don't even have a brother, so three of those points above are already completely irrelevant to me.
As for whether I finish movies... I rarely ever stop watching once I've started, almost never. Given the sheer volume of films I’ve sat through in my lifetime, there have been only a handful that I actually turned off, and this one happened to be one of them. I just couldn't force myself to keep going because there was absolutely nothing interesting enough to grab me or give me a reason to stick it out until the credits rolled.
If you need proof of how much grit I have when it comes to sitting through a movie—I actually finished ☕Max Payne

Just got back from the theater...
Since I wasn't expecting much to begin with, I wasn't exactly disappointed (though I’d have loved if it actually exceeded my low bar).
The best scene was when the two leads are trapped in a basement plotting their escape while the guy outside overhears everything.
And that part where the three of them are sitting in a diner recapping all their trauma? It felt like some random DVD extra accidentally spliced into the middle of the movie.
To top it off—how do you even explain the fact that 99% of the audience in an almost empty theater were just middle schoolers? When I walked in, I honestly thought I had the wrong auditorium... maybe they were showing a cartoon?

Watched it last night—honestly? Not even funny, let alone interesting. Maybe two decent laughs in there, but the rest was just straight garbage... thumbs down👎👎

So, I finally sat down to watch this movie today because—if I remember right—one of my friends actually recommended it to me...

It’s honestly one of those rare movies where I couldn't even make it to the end. It was just such a slog. I kept trying to find at least one moment to laugh, but nothing. I pushed through more than halfway, but eventually, I realized that sitting there would just be a total waste of my time...

Like what the user above said—it wasn't funny, and it definitely wasn't interesting...
