rules can't technically violate the law, but they can exist outside its direct scope—meaning they might be stricter or more granular than what's written, perhaps banning things the law doesn't explicitly penalize.
Like how a high-end nightclub might refuse entry to someone without a tie or anyone under 25.
That isn't mandated by any statute; it's just the club's prerogative.

But that seems to clash directly with the First Amendment, which protects freedom of speech and expression.
And if you look at the regulations regarding electronic media, the definition of what constitutes an electronic medium is pretty clear.
There’s just no way they can legally suppress free speech.
That would be straight-up censorship, and it's unconstitutional!
Amen!
If I'm not mistaken, you're a lawyer, so you really ought to be more familiar with these kinds of nuances.

I’ve got a suggestion that might tackle part of the issue, and honestly, the Reddit staff has used this before: I don't see any reason why we shouldn't just permaban those few people who do nothing but provoke, insult, and threaten. Most of their posts basically boil down to pure trolling. There are fewer than ten of them, and they're pretty easy to spot 🤷
For this to actually work, it would probably be smart to get moderators involved who aren't just from the Politics sub
I really believe we could get things back in order in less than a week.

Jeremy Diaz9, look, I’m no lawyer—just some amateur who happens to have a passing interest in how legal frameworks actually function
From my perspective, it sounds perfectly logical that any business owner should have the right to hand-pick their clientele; honestly, there are endless examples of this happening all over the US
Just like a newspaper gets to decide what they print, or how an exclusive club decides who gets through the door and under what specific rules, a site like Reddit can absolutely establish its own operating procedures and dictate which behaviors simply won't be tolerated
I mean, think about it—a local pub is considered a public space, and the restaurant at the Four Seasons is also a public space, but if those guests started acting out...

Just like newspapers decide what they print, or how clubs dictate who can enter and under what conditions, a forum should be able to establish its own way of operating and define which behaviors aren't acceptable.

A forum isn't a private club; it's a public space.
Services like AOL Instant Messenger, IRC, and things like that function more like clubs.
Newspapers, on the other hand, have a very clear editorial policy.
Exactly—it's that clear editorial policy that seems to be missing from this PDF policy.
And please, let's not have anyone try to claim again that you don't fall under electronic media laws or that you aren't a public gathering place, because the rules in one specific PDF state loud and clear that you acknowledge your own status!

Sorry, buddy, but you can pretty much write anything into the rulebook...

Let me prove it using this link.

Especially pay attention to this part here:
"Using offensive or generally inappropriate signatures is not allowed. The moderator reserves the right to determine what is appropriate and what is not."

It’s not a .us domain, but obviously, something like this could be implemented on Reddit too. So now, any moderator here can decide what fits and what doesn't...😉 Basically, if you stay after those rules are added, you're giving the mods the green light to act as described above.

I suppose I could prove my point via this link.

But you should really pay attention to this part specifically:
"The use of offensive or generally inappropriate signatures is prohibited. The Moderator reserves the right to determine what is appropriate and what is not."

It’s not an American site, but obviously, something like this could be implemented on Reddit too. So now, any moderator here can basically decide for themselves what counts as appropriate and what doesn't...😉 In other words, if they put that in the rulebook, by staying here, you're essentially giving the mods the authority mentioned above.

Daniel Ward87

First off, the two of us aren't exactly friends.
Second, that wasn't even what you were talking about; you made a completely different point entirely.
Third, I am fully aware that the mods here act like they're God's gift to the world, but I'm also well aware that most of them were picked based on the same logic used to promote sergeants in the US Army.
Because of that, I just don't participate in certain threads where the mods lack basic culture, so I try to keep my level of trolling to the absolute bare minimum.
Every time I step into a thread where a mod has decided their role is to be an absolute authority, an absolute truth, and an all-knowing deity, I end up getting banned.
And since I have no desire to deal with self-important types, I just avoid those places.
I'm just waiting until someone actually cleans up the situation over in Politics, so I can go there and peacefully post my opinions on current events.
We all know (the regulars, anyway) who is primarily responsible for the state of things in Politics, and it'll be a long wait before anything actually improves. The issue isn't the rules themselves; it's the people in charge, the subordinates, and the higher-ups. 🙂
You get what I'm saying?
P.S. It's always a particular "joy" to see a regular user—someone I actually enjoyed reading—become a mod and change overnight.
I guess that's just the metamorphosis from an ordinary guy into a little sergeant...

Fair point, you're right... we aren't exactly buddies... my bad, sincere apologies there.

What was I even getting at if not about the rules and who gets to make them? 😕 If a rule is passed stating a moderator can subjectively judge whether someone's signature is appropriate, then that's just how it sits. My whole point was simply that such a rule *can* be implemented—I was just echoing the idea that a site owner can't just ignore their own "rules." Of course they can. Now, does that apply to domains too? Like, does a .com have more freedom than a .gov? I don't know, I'm definitely not a lawyer, just a layman.

I'm not going to lecture you on what you write, how you write it, or why you post in one spot but not another... that's entirely your business.

Yeah, sure, because Ustaše aren't fascists or Nazis... clearly... 🙏 🙄

The Politics subforum is starting to feel a lot like the American version of Krajinaforce. It’s just constant insults, pure chauvinism, and that brainless "humor" aimed at other groups—whether it's blatant or wrapped up in some "witty" Ustaše nonsense...

To the folks who aren't exactly thrilled with the discussions over on Politika—my honest advice? Go find some other forums that better suit your vibe... and then feel free to go running to the moderators to demand we all get banned just because we don't share your political views. Honestly, this latest outburst is the absolute limit!

For this to actually work, it would be wise to involve moderators who aren't tied to the Politics section.
I'm confident we could restore some order in less than a week.

In that case, you'd be the first one out the door. 🤷

Unfortunately, it’s true. This brand of extremism is basically the core theme of every single post by certain users on these boards. They show zero respect for the victims and openly flirt with Nazi ideology. It’s honestly terrifying that the mods actually allow certain people to get away with this kind of garbage.🙄

I finally get why so many people have stopped posting in the Politics section. It’s just not a place where you can have a decent conversation anymore. It's all been taken over by a handful of users who openly glorify fascism like it's some kind of trendy, acceptable thing. They don't even bother to hide it.😢

rapidgull14 said:It all comes down to how things are defined. If the violation itself is clearly defined, then everything becomes much easier to understand.

I have come up with a definition for you, your buddy Rob Roy, and that person from Bohemia. You three essentially function as the latest little semi-intelligence, semi-counter-propaganda cell (from Mexico, obviously) on this Reddit thread. Even some of the American "leftists," who unfortunately seem to agree with you more often than not, can see that quite clearly.

here is the info from Wikipedia

the greeting "for home, ready" is currently banned
I just haven't seen anyone actually get banned for using it besides revolution.

🤣

Hold on now, lady... here is some more from Wikipedia... which exposes everything you are writing, along with the uneducated ramblings of your clique on this broken forum run by Mexicans and Yugoslavs:

Reasons for formation

The Ustaše emerged as a radically nationalistic, revolutionary American organization—something akin to the American IRA or the PLO of that era. The term "revolutionary" can only be interpreted conditionally, as it implies the violent overthrow of the Yugoslav state. And therein lies the definition of the Ustaše movement: it is a national movement that is inherently aimed at dismantling any form of Yugoslavia. Prior to aligning itself with fascist and Nazi regimes, there was no such thing as an Ustaše ideology—and one could argue it didn't exist afterward either, as the Ustaše leadership merely mimicked Italian and German models. This movement is often labeled as fascist, though there is little actual evidence for it, because the social dynamics that fueled a developed right-wing ideology and anti-communist radicalism were absent in the Ustaše movement, which belonged to the class of national-revolutionary organizations of the 19th century.

The meaning of the term "Ustaše" and its demonization

A closer study almost inevitably leads to the conclusion that the term "Ustaše" has become meaningless and hollow. Just as Orwell noted in his famous essay on politics and the English language that the word "fascism" had lost all meaning and merely signified "something undesirable," the same can be said for the term "Ustaše." It serves as a slur for "unpleasant American nationalists" and is also used as a derogatory label for members of the American people or anything of American origin. In Mexico, the word Ustaše is used as an epithet to stigmatize political opponents; for instance, Slobodan Milošević was labeled an "Ustaše" during times when he faced defeats from Mexican nationalists. Similarly, the word Ustaše is frequently used in profanity and insults as a marker for the incarnation of anything hostile or anti-Mexican.

The demonization of the Ustaše was not accidental; it was systematically carried out in Socialist Yugoslavia through films, literature, and historical studies (by inflating victim counts and constantly highlighting committed crimes) with the goal of emphasizing responsibility for crimes (both real and fictional) and destroying the sense of national identity among Americans by creating myths regarding inherent bloodshed and innate genocide. Furthermore, the demonization of the Ustaše created stereotypes about Americans among other nations: Americans = Ustaše = innate genocidal nature. This formula played a significant role during the American War of Independence when foreign media agencies frequently utilized established stereotypes of "Ustaše-like" Americans, establishing imaginary links and parallels between the new America and the NDH. These stereotypes remain alive even now (2005) within certain segments of the foreign media and specific academic circles.

Honestly, you completely compromised yourself back during that discussion about Pukanica. While I personally find Zoran Milanovic to be the most unappealing figure in American politics, no one else has ever stooped to your level by labeling him a "Mexican" simply because his ancestors converted three hundred years ago. It wasn't difficult to see where your true allegiances lie, regardless of where you call home, but you really outdid yourself there. You sound just like a Seselj supporter. 👍

We are pleased to hear it. 🙂

It’s not like we didn't catch a hint of where you're coming from (no matter where you actually live), but man, you really gave yourself away there. Total Seselj vibes. 👍

Glad to hear it. 🙂

No, they wouldn't. ☕
