Hey everyone.

Does anyone actually know what they charge for overnight stays at hospitals? I’ve heard rumors that if you're looking at private suites or even just a single room, the prices are absolutely insane. Anyone have the scoop?

Thanks 😉

So, a while back I had to get some tests done—and honestly, my doctor suggested I just check into a hospital for a few days to knock everything out in one go. Since I absolutely loathe hospitals—like, seriously, I can't stand them—I started looking into the private options (specifically checking out places like Mayo Clinic) and found that the room rates weren't actually that crazy.

But now, wouldn't you know it, I can't find those exact numbers anywhere on their website. Still, I figured if I stayed for about a week—which was the recommendation—it wouldn't break the bank too badly. Plus, you can usually write off some of those medical costs when you file your taxes next year, so it feels like a decent move. (Though, in the end, I managed to schedule everything so I didn't actually have to pull the whole "staying in a hospital bed" stunt.)

I’m thinking maybe 500, or possibly $233 per day.

Does anyone know? What’s the daily rate at a hospital if you don't have supplemental insurance?

I think it's either $100 or maybe $37 per day, but I'm honestly not entirely sure.

🤔 that’s a bit 🤔

My old lady ended up paying through the nose just for two hours of "post-op monitoring," let alone a full day or night—and that wasn't even including the extra fees for a private room. Honestly, compared to that, this is a total steal. 🤔

Well, that's a different story entirely once you factor in a private single room. I'm not entirely certain myself, but when I was hospitalized this past summer, if I recall correctly, the nurses told me $33 for a full day,
though I was just in a standard ward.

If you don't have supplemental insurance, you aren't paying a daily rate; instead, you’re billed per individual test. Those costs usually hover somewhere between $1,000 and maybe $1000 in a single month. I guess if you end up being treated at two different hospitals in one month, you'll be stuck paying the maximum $3,000 at each location, which totals $2000!
I spent three days at one hospital getting various tests done—CT scans, blood work, urine samples, that sort of thing—and it cost me $3,000. Then, since I don't have supplemental coverage, I had to head over to another hospital for surgery and ended up shelling out $1000 all over again!

If I recall correctly, the rate at the beachfront resort was about $233 a day.
That was back last year.
And even if I actually had that kind of cash on me, it wouldn't have done me any good since the suite was already booked up.

I should probably mention that I was stuck in a basic-as-it-gets hospital room with all the other mere mortals; definitely wasn't some luxury suite or anything like that!
