Just one question here—I was looking at the Scarleticin ban issued to Scarlet regarding that topic you shut down so aggressively.
Sometimes I browse this section of the forum and most of the reasoning seems pretty solid, so this one actually caught me off guard. 🙄

What I’m really wondering is if posting here might eventually trigger some kind of delayed ban down the road? 🤷
And look, I'm not trying to troll you (your choice of words).

I'm just asking because I occasionally want to pose a question. Like right now.
I wanted to ask generally about the chats, since I just realized today that they're actually against the forum policy.

Is it going to be the case that most of these chats will eventually end up being moved to OT sooner or later?

(this has nothing to do with the finger thing—it is what it is, what can you do... things are hard to change around here anyway)

Yeah, thanks, I’d actually love to know that too. Honestly, I was just scrolling through and couldn't wrap my head around why the ban happened in the first place—that's exactly why I ended up lurking here—but then this explanation caught my eye... 🤷

I’m also wondering why Scarletlemur got hit with a seven-day ban—like, what was the actual basis for that? And why were those little threads moved over to the off-topic section... I’d honestly love for one of those brilliant moderators to explain to me how that somehow doesn't contribute to the USA. What are the actual criteria for "contributing" here? Who exactly did the finger of fate offend? Because from where I’m sitting, there’s zero reason to push us away from the US-themed discussions, yet we didn't even get a straight answer. It makes me wonder how these moderators themselves contribute to the USA, and by what authority they feel entitled to play God on this platform—banning people and moving chats whenever they feel like it without ever actually asking anyone anything. It’s just plain rude, if you ask me.

Honestly, I’m not a fan of how you just nuked that thread so suddenly. It was obvious people needed to vent—otherwise, you end up with people getting banned or, even worse, hit with some sketchy bans.
Showing off that kind of authority is never a vibe. This place is supposed to be where people can actually complain, for crying out loud.
Reminds me of that whole mess over at the IRS...🤣

Is there anyone else running the show here besides mellowraven22? Not that it matters, but it’d be nice to know if posting stuff here actually carries any long-term consequences?

I don't think these are minor or insignificant issues, especially when they are happening for the first time.

I am trying—in good faith and without using "one mellowraven22 phrase"—to 😁 come up with any logical reason why treating chat threads on a sub-forum like "Weaving Goblen" would be any different from how they treat chat threads on a sub-forum like "Counting Angels on a Needle" — and, I have to admit, I’m failing.

On one hand, a chat is just a chat, isn't it? It's just a specific group of people who get used to showing up at a certain spot—that "where everybody knows your name" kind of vibe—to talk; sometimes it's meaningful, sometimes it's nonsense—which, honestly, doesn't really matter. Some of these people leave "footprints" in other threads, while others don't—but, I would truly love to hear how moving these chats will improve the quality of the sub-forum?! 😕 What is going to specifically happen when a chat gets moved, other than one, two, or three top threads disappearing, thereby (neither more nor less) "improving the quality of the sub-forum"? 😕 I am genuinely, and in good faith, curious about this answer.

On the other hand, one could argue the point that chatters don't really care where they gather.

On a third note, to me, this looks like taking a regular crowd from one local diner and moving them to another for no clear reason simply because "it's all the same anyway."

The whole saga of moving chat topics has been seen before: the relocation, the rebellion, and the arguments. During the last major reshuffle I followed (with the IRS), the moderators eventually brought the chat threads back—which I consider to have been a very wise move on their part.

Just like in many other life situations, you can approach this with a restrictive "Why should they exist?" (meaning, why should chat threads exist on topical sub-forums), or with a permissive "Why shouldn't they?". Personally, I find the latter approach much closer to my own philosophy in life.

Therefore, I believe this is something that should be established as a standard forum rule, rather than leaving it to the discretion of individual moderators to do whatever they want with the chats. BTW, if the chats are considered "trash" (which consequently qualifies the participants as well), I think it would be more consistent to just abolish them entirely (with all the potential consequences) rather than periodically posting sentences that, perhaps unintentionally, essentially mean "what you're writing is garbage, be happy we even tolerate you."

I wouldn't use the word "serving" or anything similar to describe anyone's forum duties—but, wouldn't it be nice if everyone, in their respective forum roles, tried to make sure the people on the forum feel welcome?

I don't know if I should mention: to put it mildly, I very, very, very rarely post in the chat threads. 🙂

I’m dying to know what kind of US policy we’re even talking about and why on earth we don't fit the mold over there.
Seriously, isn't it weirder that these lonely hearts have zero chat activity when that's exactly where they need it most?

I haven't seen a single post from Scarletlemur where she was actually swearing at someone or being insulting, aside from maybe those dictatorial policies everyone already agrees on anyway.
It would be pretty great if you could actually point out her "offensive" posts, because she got slapped with a seven-day ban like she went on a profanity-laced rampage or somehow managed to spit on everyone's monitors—why all this hostility and such heavy-handed punishment?

All they’ve really managed to do is make us feel like we aren't welcome in the US—which, let's be honest, is pretty obvious at this point—and this whole Scarletlemur situation feels less like moderation and more like a straight-up witch hunt... I can't tell if they're just trying to soothe someone's ego or what else is going on here.

Nicholas King, you nailed it with that write-up.
Look, this isn't just some random hangout spot, which is exactly why we're pissed about the move; we used to actually get in there to help people solve real problems and host meetups if they were down, and if they weren't, they had plenty of other threads to blow off steam in instead of whining about our specific community space, which was built strictly for hanging out, making connections, diving into deep topics, and looking out for Americans.
The mods weren't even being jerks, they were just trying to kick the spammers out so the chat could go back to what it was originally meant for, but clearly someone decided to play victim because now those users are getting banned for absolutely no reason at all.

I'm curious about how users from other subforums actually improve the quality of those specific communities (not naming names here), in ways that this US chat hasn't quite managed yet.
Also, I'm trying to wrap my head around why Scarlet was banned, because the moderator's explanation just isn't clicking for me.🤷

There was recently a discussion over on the US boards that directly targeted people trying to run ads on the platform. Instead of actually adding value, the whole thread just focused on mocking the users posting them. How exactly does tearing people down improve the quality of our PDFs? Or how does it help when the chat participants have to constantly police themselves just to keep the conversation from spiraling away from the actual purpose of the US community?
Seriously, you've got moderators participating in threads where advertisers are being insulted, openly expressing their contempt and making fun of people.

Also, I’d really appreciate some transparency regarding why Scarlet was banned. Given how tense things are right now, it would be helpful for everyone to understand what we're supposed to gain from a seven-day ban like that.

Look, I’m not gonna keep rehashing this same old story. The chat moved over to OT and that's the end of it. End of story.

Scarletica totally missed the mark here. Her whole thing on the FBI is just pure trolling—honestly, there isn't a single coherent or logical post in the entire mess.

Also, regarding those subforum chats—it's basically up to the moderators to decide if they stay put or get nuked. It's their call.

Hey there. 🙂

Look, I really shouldn’t be sticking my nose into the whole mess regarding moving the American chats around because the mods and admins have already laid out their reasoning, and honestly, that should pretty much wrap up the debate. But seriously, people acting like this was some sudden, impulsive whim? Give me a break. Back when I was serving as a moderator for the US section—which was about six months ago, if memory serves—and even before then, we were all hyper-aware of how messy the chat situation had become. We were actually trying to design a space that functioned like a genuine community hub for Americans. The whole goal was to create a spot that would finally replace those endless, repetitive threads where everyone just vents about their own personal drama, and instead, actually get people talking to one another and building some real connections.

Look, I thought we were actually going to have a themed discussion here, but clearly, I was getting ahead of myself.

We haven't managed to pull anything off in that timeframe, and honestly, looking around, it’s pretty clear nothing has changed. But then again, how could it? This whole chat topic has just been overrun by people who couldn't write a single constructive post on a major US forum if their lives depended on it. It’s devolved into nothing more than just another generic, mindless chat room where actual substance goes to die.

Look, I know I’m basically just rambling about things that have absolutely nothing to do with my own life, but honestly, I couldn't help myself—I had to jump in here and give Nicholas King a response to this:

Nicholas King said:I don't think these are minor or insignificant issues, especially when they are happening for the first time.

I don't know if I should mention: to put it mildly, I very, very, very rarely post in the chat threads. 🙂

The moderator really needs to start citing their sources. I don't even know where to start with this whole mess, honestly. It’s just one thing after another, isn't it? You think you've finally got a handle on things, maybe even a little breathing room, and then—boom—everything just falls apart like a cheap card tower in a windstorm. It's almost funny if you stop to think about how predictable the chaos is. One minute you're cruising along, thinking everything is fine, and the next, you're staring at a complete disaster, wondering how you even got here in the first place. It's like that old saying about how life doesn't give you much of a heads-up before it decides to throw a wrench in your gears. Just constant, relentless movement toward more confusion. Have you seen what’s actually going on in his subforum lately? It’s like watching a slow-motion train wreck—you can see exactly where this is headed, right? The chat threads are absolutely exploding, honestly, we’re talking hundreds of posts rolling in every single day. And then there’s me, stuck playing digital janitor, having to comb through every single one of those endless walls of text just to make sure nobody’s being abusive, dropping sketchy links, or leaking private info. It’s just one thing after another, a constant mountain of nonsense to sift through.

Look, let's be real for a second—a moderator isn't supposed to be some kind of glorified janitor sweeping up trash all day; honestly, they shouldn't even be touching that stuff. That’s just not the job description. A real moderator should be out there actually steering the conversation, keeping the discussions on track, and putting in the actual legwork to make the subforum better—you know, like curating the topic lists, spinning up new threads when things get stale, merging redundant ones, and all that good stuff. They should be architects of the community, not just the cleaning crew.

Honestly, after you’ve slogged through five hundred consecutive messages in the general chat—just people rambling about what they had for lunch, what show they’re binge-watching on Netflix, or how many times they’ve had to take a bathroom break today—you find yourself completely drained. You’ve got zero mental bandwidth left to actually engage with the rest of the subforum the way you ought to. It’s exhausting. And let’s be real, that constant stream of chatter adds absolutely nothing to the actual quality of this community; that's what the constructive, deep-dive threads are for. You end up burning through all your time and energy on someone’s incoherent nonsense that, once it hits ten thousand posts, is just going to end up in the digital trash bin anyway. It’s a total waste of breath, don't you think?

Honestly, I don't see why it would be an issue. We've got moderators who handle the heavy lifting—reading through posts and keeping the chats in check (and let's be real, they’re usually active in them anyway)—and then there are those who prefer to stay behind the scenes, but that’s hardly a crisis because we have dedicated spaces like the Lounge or the Off-Topic boards specifically for the chatterboxes. There’s absolutely no reason for anyone to feel left out or sidelined; we've made sure there's a spot for everyone to hang out. 🙂

This hits the nail on the head. It’s just proof that mods turn these forums into their own little echo chambers where they support their buddies while everyone else gets shut out—sometimes even losing access to the comments entirely.

Just to be clear, I wasn't sitting there counting my fingers or anything, but even I didn't find the chat annoying.🙂

Yeah, and since we’re already diving into this whole moved thread situation, I want to know if we’re ever going to get an apology for calling that topic "trash." Seriously, that doesn't sit right with me at all. Those were my own words being thrown back in my face—calling my own stuff garbage? It’s insulting. I mean, I’m a dedicated member of this forum, aren't I?

Just wondering, since when do mods on specific subforums get such free rein over site policy to just decide which chat threads get nuked from their sections? If you already pulled the chat from the US-themed section, be consistent and clear it out from the other subforums too. I'm not trying to be petty here, I'm just asking about the editorial policy of this forum—it seems like the "standard" rules are being stretched pretty thin for some people.

Look, if you feel like you’re being insulted or picked on, I’m sorry, but that wasn't the intention. You guys are still hanging out; it’s just moved to a chat room—or a cafe, as Nicholas King put it. The reason for moving the chat thread was pretty straightforward: the topics turned into private little social clubs rather than discussions. My suggestion was to move that interaction over to DC because that's where people actually socialize, which makes more sense.

I get that you’re pissed off and feeling screwed over, but honestly, I think you’re blowing this way out of proportion. It’s just a chat thread. Every single one of these threads eventually gets locked down or deleted anyway (if they haven't been already, they will be sooner or later), so I don't see why we need a full-blown revolution over this.

Let’s be real for a second: you aren't really part of the USA community here. Most of you aren't even ACTIVE participants in the USA section. You could go through 120 different threads and your presence would be basically zero. Out of maybe 25 regulars, only a handful show up; the rest of you are just hiding out in the chat. If the whole goal is just to chat, you can do that anywhere else. And no, this isn't about me flexing my muscles or some bullshit like that. I’ve been a mod for eight years, and half the time I get criticized for not using my tools enough and instead spending too much time explaining things or trying to have actual debates right in the middle of a thread. Being a mod isn't my identity—who actually cares about that?

Truthfully, I don't have the energy to start a war with 25 people I haven't done anything to, but if this absolute nonsense is what it takes to trigger a fight, then so be it. Nobody has an issue with you; it's just that you aren't participating in the Jesus-style USA forums, you're just socializing, and that's the whole point. You are still more than welcome to come to the USA section and discuss things in the threads. Just chill. I haven't seen this much toxicity and personal attacks in a long time, and for what? Because two threads got moved? Kamon. 😉

Because they do. That’s how it was decided. My point is simple: if a chat thread is actually PART of a subforum—meaning it’s where the regulars hang out, where new people join the fold, etc.—then it makes sense to keep it.

Keeping little closed-off cliques doesn't make any sense on the US-themed board.

Hold on... because it actually worked... 🙂that chat was exactly where old-timers and new Americans were encouraged to actually bond. At every single meetup, there was always at least one new face from the site present..

And as for why I don't post much else on the main boards... I can tell you from my own experience. I joined this site specifically because I wanted to meet new people, plain and simple. I posted a bit, hit up the chat, met them, and that was it. I got what I came for. That's why I don't bother posting more. It's also because everything here is just the same damn topics over and over again. 🤷

Just tell me, feraltrucker5, which single moderator has actually bothered to moderate the Finger since Faca stepped down?

I'm totally with you on the spam issue; we actually tried to wipe it out and were doing your job for you, but the second we started making progress, you guys tossed us straight to the bottom and abandoned the lonely souls over in Off-Topic. 😲
