Hey everyone, I’ve got a few questions for you!
So, three days ago, I finally went through with a frenectomy because mine was way too short—you know how it goes...
I’m a bit lost on what the recovery process actually looks like. To be honest, I was so overwhelmed and anxious both before and after the procedure that I completely blanked and didn't even think to ask my surgeon a single follow-up question about aftercare!

I've got a few stitches in there right now, and honestly, it looks pretty weird. It’s also been pretty painful...
My doctor mentioned something about not cleaning the area, but I'm not sure if he meant just for the first two days while I had that Vaseline gauze on, or if it's longer than that?
Sometimes there’s a little bit of blood too. Also, when do the stitches usually fall out?

If any of you have been through this, please let me know what worked for you. I’ve heard people mention rinsing with chamomile tea (how many days in, and how should I do it?) or using some kind of medicated cream (any specific brands?)

P.S. Will I be left with visible scarring once it heals? If so, is it super obvious? And for those of you who’ve had this done, are you happy with the end result?

Thanks in advance!

When my daughter had her frenulotomy done at the dentist's office, they told us to have her rinse with some strong sage tea. She kept up with the rinses right up until they removed the sutures. There wasn't any scarring at all, and everything healed up perfectly fine.

Wait, aren't you mixing things up here??
Isn't a frenulotomy actually a surgical procedure on the male anatomy?🤷 I mean, I'm obviously no medical expert and I don't personally know anyone who's dealt with this, but Google says that's what it is.

Isn't a frenulotomy an operation on the male anatomy?🤷 I'm certainly no doctor and don't know anyone who's had it done, but according to Google, that's what it is.

Actually, a frenulotomy is just removing the frenulum—that little bit of tissue that connects your front teeth to your upper lip or sits under your tongue. That's likely why she needed the procedure before getting her braces on.
Are there any other types of frenulums out there?... 🤷
Isn't the thing you're talking about actually called the prepuce?

Isn't what you're talking about called a circumcision?

... but you guys are right, there are two types of frenulums: one on the tongue and one on the male anatomy.
I ended up having the "down there" one done.
Check out some images you can find online to get an idea of what it looks like!

I ended up having the procedure done on the lower one.
If you want to get an idea of what that looks like, you can just search for some images online to see the general layout!

Well, I guess that means you won't be sipping much sage tea anytime soon! 😂 Sorry...
But seriously, you should probably use some Bepanthen Plus (either the cream or the ointment, whatever you prefer, just make sure it has dexpanthenol to speed up healing and maybe something to prevent infection). You can pick it up at any local CVS or Walgreens.

I had my lingual frenulum removed, but my tongue still feels too short... is there any way to actually lengthen it?

I had my frenulum removed, but my tongue still feels too short... it barely touches my bottom lip and keeps curling at the tip. Is there any way to actually lengthen it so it stops curling?
