So, after a few months of picking up some weights and doing exercises, I started adding push-ups into the mix. The second I put weight on my left wrist, I felt this sharp pain, but I just brushed it off, thinking it was nothing, and powered through the set anyway. Now, I’ve been waking up in actual pain, and today my arm is swollen and hurts even if I barely move it. What should I do?? Should I go get an MRI or just stay off it entirely!!!!???
thanks

How bad is the pain, though? Honestly, if you haven't hit the gym in a minute, it’s pretty standard to pull something... happens to the best of us. I’ve dealt with my hip and my foot acting up like that before, but it eventually chills out. Even my boyfriend was complaining yesterday about his arm—said he let the weight drop too fast and felt this sudden yank up his shoulder. Those kinds of tweaks usually just go away once you get back into a routine. My hip used to kill me for days at a time, too... but I got over it. Still, if the pain is actually unbearable, maybe just go see a doctor? Where does it hurt exactly? Look, I'm definitely not a pro, so take this with a grain of salt... someone here might actually know their stuff better than I do. But seriously, if you can't even stand it, go get checked out. And please, don't push it! Even if you feel like you can power through, just don't. If you weren't warming up properly, it’s no surprise you caught an injury. It might just be some heavy inflammation since you've been off for a while. That always happens when you start back up... you get so sore you can't move a muscle. My little tip? Grab some Advil before you start working out. Seriously, it helps a ton. How often are you training? You hitting up a local gym or just doing stuff at home?

So, I was working out without any weights right after my gym session, and then I decided to grab some light dumbbells... and throw in some push-ups. Now, I don't see any obvious swelling or anything dramatic, but there’s this nagging pain right in the wrist area—mostly around the palm and fingers. The joint itself feels completely locked up; I can't move it up, down, or even side-to-side. Zero rotation whatsoever. Honestly, I think that wrist might have been a little weak to begin with, and while I don't think I actually tore anything, the pain is just incredibly irritating. I’m going to pop an Advil, even though I almost never take medication. I've had pains wake me up before, sometimes thinking it's just because I slept on my hand weirdly, but this feels like something more...
I'm pretty sure that weight did me in because I skipped my warm-up and ended up straining it... ugh, but thanks for the advice!

That doesn't sound good at all... you should probably go get an X-ray or an MRI just to be safe.

Honestly, that doesn't sound great to me either... A bit much for just some muscle tightness, but I wouldn't freak out just yet. I used to get those weird spasms where my joints would just lock up on me, too. Still, you should probably hit up a doctor and see if they want to run an X-ray or whatever... BUT LISTEN, YOU HAVE TO WARM UP BEFORE TRAINING, AND AFTER TOO!??!?! SERIOUSLY!! And I don't mean some five-second quick stretch, either. People seriously have no clue how vital that is... especially if your ankle is already a little sketchy. How have you been training lately?

What kind of exercises? I mean, it’s pretty obvious—I just overdid it on my joints, specifically my shoulders and biceps. Honestly, though, I think the real kicker was when I was hitting shoulders. Doing those front raises! It's hard to say, and people keep telling me I should probably wrap it up, but I just popped a 400 mg ibuprofen. I’m planning on taking it three times a day, and since I already took one before 5:00, it actually feels like it's starting to kick in! There really isn't much else I can do... maybe I just let my imagination run a little wild with the panic. It's different when you have muscle soreness in your leg or your arm, you know? But when it hits such a tiny, specific spot, it really makes you second-guess things... thanks anyway!

Yeah, fair point. I had this weird little pain on my foot once and totally spiraled thinking it was something serious, but turns out it was just from hitting the gym too hard. Seriously though, once you start working out, you realize how weirdly your body reacts to everything. Just keep at it! The soreness will fade fast, and honestly, after about a month, you’ll already start seeing results 👍 just please, stretch! Like, head to toe, before and especially after your workout. It helps with the inflammation and just chills you out. Good luck!

So, I noticed this weird little swelling popping up near my wrist—not even sure exactly when it started, but it’s been there for a bit now. Specifically, whenever I flex my hands, like if I bend both my right and left wrists, the right one kind of... pops out? There's this distinct little ball you can feel, but nothing at all on my left hand. It doesn't hurt at all, which is weird, but it feels pretty hard to the touch. When I keep my hand straight, you can barely even see it, so I’m thinking maybe it’s just a bone or a joint shifting out of place or something... Right in front of this "lump," there's this little dip, similar to how my other wrist looks, except the gap here is way bigger, almost like something is pushing its way out from underneath... My mom mentioned she had the exact same thing happen on her right hand about 20 years ago, though hers faded down quite a bit over time. I don't remember straining my wrist or anything lately; I was hitting the weights pretty hard last year and dealt with some aches, but I haven't lifted anything heavy at all in the last 8 months... I've got an appointment scheduled with my primary care doctor tomorrow, but I was curious if any of you guys have dealt with something like this or have any ideas? I'm 20, by the way...

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...-cyst-2008.png Just throwing this image up there so you guys can get a real sense of what we're dealing with here. This isn't actually my hand, obviously, but the swelling I've got going on looks pretty much identical, just maybe a little less dramatic than this one...

I went through the exact same thing... I first noticed it maybe two or three months ago, but since there was no pain, I didn't think much of it. Then a few days ago, I made a sudden movement with my hand and felt a sharp sting, so now I'm getting a little worried. A buddy told me his sister dealt with this exact issue and ended up going under the knife for it. Honestly, I've always had joint problems, so I’m pretty sure this is just the next chapter in my long history of aches and pains!

So, I was out playing soccer with some friends yesterday, right? I went up for a header—lost my footing mid-air, completely lost control—and slammed my wrist straight onto the concrete. Once I saw the bone actually popping out of place, my buddies and I scrambled to get to the ER. They took some X-rays, and man, the pain was just unreal... absolute agony. As soon as the surgeons saw the damage, they popped the joint back where it belongs. Now that I’m stuck in this cast, the throbbing won't quit, and I honestly have no clue when this is going to let up. Any advice on how to dull the ache, or am I just stuck waiting for it to pass on its own? 😳😳😳

Dude, you didn't just sprain your wrist, you straight up broke it. You've got a distal radius fracture with displacement—seriously, go re-read your diagnosis so you don't mistake it for some basic fracture.

Just read that myself...
and I’ve gotta say, my stomach is doing a bit of a flip wondering what that actually implies for us all.

and now my hand is feeling all swollen, so I'm lowkey freaking out about what that actually means.

Nateena, that swelling is just what happens after a fracture. You'll probably be stuck in a cast for 4 to 6 weeks. The pain will die down soon.

Thanks a ton—quick question though, am I looking at any serious fallout once they finally get this cast off?

It really just depends on how bad the damage is...

If your hand is killing you, just take some Advil or something... there’s really no reason to sit there and suffer when we already know what happened and the cast is already on. It's going to pass eventually, but you seriously don't have to just endure the pain until then...

Don't sweat it! You shouldn't have any issues once the cast comes off, though I guess you'll probably feel every little weather change, unfortunately.😢

So, here’s the deal... a buddy of mine took a nasty fall on his hand, and ever since, his wrist has been completely swollen up. He’s complaining about pain whenever he tries to lift anything even slightly heavy—it feels like some kind of tendon is being yanked tight. I told him he needs to go see a doctor, but he won't listen. He just keeps insisting it’s nothing and that it’ll clear up on its own... except this has been dragging on for two or three weeks now.
Do you think this is actually going to resolve itself, or is he eventually going to have to bite the bullet and head to a clinic?

Thanks!

Where exactly does it hurt? And does it hurt if you touch it?
