Two standout scenes—first, the moment in the grocery store when the kid snaps at the clerk, get them, you Paki bastard, and second, the most iconic one, where Stephen Graham recounts how a Black man tried to swipe his pudding. 🤣 😁

What was the point of the movie?

It’s been a long time since I last watched this, but man, it really stuck with me.

You watch this kid get sucked into this group of skinheads—who honestly just look like your typical neighborhood hooligans and troublemakers hanging out—until Comov finally gets out after serving three years in prison. He’s got much bigger ambitions than just being a delinquent, though. He wants to turn that ragtag crew into a full-blown nationalist movement, fueled by all sorts of conspiracy theories... including that whole conflict over the Falklands, if I remember correctly.

Since the kid lost his dad in that conflict, he’s even more vulnerable, which makes him an easy target for Comov’s influence.

At its core, the movie is a critique of nationalism and racism, seen through the eyes of this boy who quickly realizes that this path just isn't for him...

That ending was so incredibly moving, and I bet you still have that Einaudi soundtrack playing in your head from the credits...

It’s a decent enough movie. It hits you hard because it’s so violent, fast-paced, and loud—there’s always this intense, raw expression happening on screen.
Even so, I felt it lacked some real depth. Then again, if you look at it through the eyes of a kid, which I suppose makes sense, you aren't necessarily looking for deep philosophical dilemmas or complex inner monologues. You just see what's happening to him in real-time.
There are some heavy scenes that might feel a bit over the top, but that's just the nature of the film.
Personally, I didn't really need the character of Comov. They could have portrayed the skinhead scene in a much more grounded way. For me, he was just a bit much.

Alright, fine, whatever.
But why toss the flag?
And why act like defending the islands against an Argentine military coup is some kind of moral failing?
We all read those history books—back then, the regime in Argentina was pure evil.
They were literally dropping people out of planes into the ocean.

And I still don't see how Margaret Thatcher has anything to do with racism or throwing a flag into the water.

Back in the day, the whole Falkland situation was a huge deal for the skinhead scene, much like how everyone was totally split over Thatcher during her era. Basically, the entire punk rock subculture just exploded out of pure frustration with the government at the time, which you can really see in both the anarchists and those on the flip side...

Comov is honestly just a straight-up sociopath who flips out the second things don't go his way. He laid hands on that girl, and then once it finally clicked for him what he’d actually done, he took her and the kid to the hospital. That's when the little guy started realizing that everything he looked up to about Comov was just plain wrong.

Tossing that flag is nothing more than a symbol of rejecting that whole ideology, especially given everything that went down right before it...

There's some logic to it

There are also four seasons of the series This is England, which follow the group in the aftermath of the film's events.

They aren't bad, I suppose.
