Honestly, you can really only do that kind of searching through WhatsApp or Skype.
Basically, anyone can just find you on those lists if they're looking.

See, AOL works totally differently because it’s more like a mix of email and instant messaging, so you’re mostly just chatting with the people you manually add to your contact list. Personally, I just add my close friends and maybe some acquaintances, but that's about it—if someone has an AOL account, I'll just ask them for their email address so I can add them.

I actually prefer it over Skype or WhatsApp because you don't deal with nearly as many random creeps or spam messages.

If you're signing up for AOL just to meet new people, you're probably gonna be disappointed. You'd be better off registering on www.match.com or maybe some international site like www.tinder.com, but really it's whatever you're into. Personally, I've always been wary of online dating because everything feels so fake—like, you never truly know if you're talking to a decent person or just some total stranger pretending to be someone else. In my book, meeting people in person is always the way to go.

Now, AOL is a completely different beast. It’s this hybrid of email and instant messaging where you actually have control. You only chat with people you manually add to your contact list. Personally, I only ever add my actual friends or a few casual acquaintances—nobody else. If someone wants to reach me on AOL, I ask for their address first so I can vet them before adding them.

For me, that’s a far superior setup compared to Skype or WhatsApp because you aren't constantly being hounded by random creeps or drowning in spam.

If your whole goal for getting on AOL was to hunt for new people to meet, then you've got your priorities totally backwards. If you want that kind of thing, you're better off signing up for www.match.com or some other international site like www.tinder.com, depending on what you're looking for. Honestly, I can't stand those online dating sites because everything feels so manufactured and fake—you never truly know if you're talking to a decent human being or some complete fraud. The best way to meet people is face-to-face in the real world..
