So, I'm starting a new thread here. This isn't about me this time, it’s actually about my dad...

Basically, about four hours ago, he took a nasty fall near our house and fractured his femur, just above the mid-section...

Now, common sense tells me he should probably have some kind of brace or immobilization on that leg right now...

He was rushed to the hospital where he's staying now, and they’re saying surgery won't happen until Friday. The problem is, he’s in absolute agony without any kind of support—not even a simple wrap or decent pain management... Are you telling me he just has to sit there and suffer for two more days?

Is there an orthopedic surgeon on this forum who can explain why this is even a thing? Because if that's the plan, he might as well just stay home O_o

Anyway, I'm heading down to the hospital tomorrow, and I need to know if I should go in there ready to start some drama or what... I’ve dealt with my own knee and femur issues for ten years now, so seeing this happening to him is driving me crazy and I just don't get it...

Hip fractures usually require osteosynthesis; there’s just no point in trying immobilization! I don't see why they wouldn't give him some pain meds

Yeah, I’m right there with you... I’ve already had two spinal fusion surgeries under my belt, and now it looks like my knee is next on the list. Honestly, at this point, what wouldn't you do just to get some relief from the pain, right?
But hey, thanks for getting back to me.

I mean, they’re definitely giving him something for the pain, because honestly, it would be totally inhumane not to... It’s such a serious fracture that there's a real risk of complications, which is why they're keeping him under observation until the surgery...

The surgery is scheduled for Friday, which means he currently doesn't have any internal fixation in his leg... and I suspect they haven't even given him anything for the pain yet...
He really ought to be in traction by now to keep the limb properly aligned; holding it this way is far too unstable, as any shifting of the bone before the procedure could lead to serious complications, though it might help mitigate some of the discomfort...

Man, I didn't get even a single pill for the pain after my accident and that freaking broken femur. So there I am, just lying in the ER waiting for hours, and right after they finished the imaging—because the pain and exhaustion were just hitting me like a truck—I completely blacked out. 😁 By the time I finally came to, I was already tucked into a hospital bed in a private room, totally drugged up and out of it.

I don't know what his injury looks like, but a buddy of mine was stuck in the hospital for quite a while—young guy too—just because they were tracking down a blood clot caused by a fracture. That's no joke...

I broke my femur. I start physical therapy in two weeks. Does anyone have any insight into how long the recovery process typically takes? If you know, thanks...

Hey everyone. So, about a month ago, I had a bit of an accident—fell off a balcony and ended up breaking my hip, specifically the femoral neck. Since I’m still pretty young at 21, the surgeons decided against a full hip replacement; instead, they went with internal fixation using three screws and a plate. I was wondering if anyone else here has dealt with something similar? I'd love to know how your recovery process went and roughly how long it took you to get back on your feet.

Hey everyone!

About two weeks ago, on July 25th, I had a nasty accident and ended up with a fracture in my lower femur, just above the knee. Since the accident happened while I was traveling in Canada, I had surgery there; they installed a titanium plate over the break and secured everything with screws. They put me in a splint and told me to stay immobile. However, once I was transferred to the Mayo Clinic a few days later, they did follow-up X-rays and decided I actually didn't need the splint anymore so I could start moving my knee. I finally got discharged to take care of myself at home this past Monday.

My discharge papers mention a "femoral fracture without severe or very severe complications." Does anyone know what those "complications" (CC) actually refer to in medical terms?
Also, why would they take the splint off so early? Is there a specific reason for that? Every time I read about bone fractures online, it says you’re supposed to wear a brace or splint for a set amount of time...

I was sent home with crutches, but since my physical therapist wasn't particularly helpful, I'm still feeling pretty lost. I have no idea how often I should be using them—am I just supposed to use them for trips to the bathroom and back to bed, or more? If anyone has dealt with this kind of fracture before, I’d really appreciate some insight.

The swelling from the surgery has gone down and the bruising is clearing up. I’m not even taking any pain meds anymore, but the main issue is that I can't bend my knee fully. It still looks a bit bulkier than my other knee, and it feels tight whenever I try to flex it. My entire thigh above the knee also looks a little more swollen than the healthy leg. How much longer does it usually take for the swelling to completely vanish, and how long until I get my full range of motion back??
(On the bright side, I’ve noticed things seem to be improving slightly every day, and it feels like I'm gaining a little more flexibility with each bend).
