Umm... what are the odds I'll run into her in Washington, D.C.... and when are we actually getting vaccinated against this thing...

Because some stray dog just tried to take a chunk out of me right on the spot and now there's this red patch—it might just be an acne flare-up, but honestly... I can't even tell what it is anymore...

That stuff is lethal.... from what I've heard...

Someone please help me out here....

If you have any doubts, I suggest acting immediately; once symptoms begin to manifest, there is often no turning back...😁 If you suspect anything, go right away.

Well, there's definitely a chance you could catch it, and vaccination is more of a passive thing, so basically after getting bitten, you'll need those antibodies to step in and block the virus.

First things first: wash the wound thoroughly with soap and water, then get to a doctor. You also need to track down the owner and find out if the dog has been vaccinated—and I mean the dog, not the owner 😬. Was the dog provoked, or did it just snap out of nowhere?

Yesterday (12/22/2007), my dog bit me—even though he’s fully up to date on all his shots—right on my thumb. I went ahead and disinfected the wound with alcohol

I need to know if there's any actual risk of me contracting rabies from an incident like this. 😢 😢 😢

No, not if the dog is vaccinated. What you really ought to be asking is when was the last time you had a tetanus shot?

Alright, I just did some digging online and it looks like that stuff still works for boosting immunity.
So, just keep cleaning all five of them thoroughly, wrap them up, and apply some Bivacin. If you see any redness or pus starting to develop, get to a doctor immediately.

What’s the typical incubation period for tetanus? Also, if those first symptoms actually start showing up, is there any chance of recovery, and does anyone here know what the specific symptoms look like?

I'm not sure I follow. Are you genuinely worried your dog has rabies, or are you just being a hypochondriac?

What’s the protocol if an infected cat bites you? And is there actually any way to fully recover from rabies once it sets in?

It’s possible, sure, but you really have to look at rabies as something you handle proactively before it ever becomes an issue. That’s how it was explained to me. You just head straight to the ER, where they’ll clean out the wound first and get you an anti-tetanus shot, and from there they’ll send you over to the local clinic to figure out exactly how many doses 😁 you're going to need.

There’s no reason to panic here, and honestly, we aren't racing against a clock, so just take a breath. Don't let the anxiety get to you because everything is treatable these days. They provide the vaccinations at the clinic, and if there is even the slightest suspicion that an animal might be rabid—which is always a bit of a gray area, but nobody is going to take that risk, so just stay calm

To be absolutely certain about a rabies diagnosis in a cat, the animal's brain has to be examined.

If there's no way to confirm—say, because the animal bolted—ER doctors will know exactly which protocols to follow and where to send you.

Acting immediately can stop the disease in its tracks; basically, it prevents the illness from ever actually developing.

But if the disease progresses past that window... may God help you.😢
