It doesn't pair well with cigarettes—it basically just wrecks the nicotine, so it's definitely bad for you😛 😛

So, I was just reading that taking too many minerals at once can actually be pretty harmful.

Does that mean I should probably head to my doctor first to get everything checked out?

Edward Taylor78, your father might be an athlete, but I suppose that doesn't necessarily make his medical advice particularly authoritative, does it?
As far as picking up some basic multivitamins or mineral supplements goes, you don't really need any special oversight or permission. You can just head down to a CVS or a Walgreens and pick them up yourself. Provided you actually stick to the recommended dosage on the label, I imagine there isn't much to fear regarding side effects.

However, if you're starting to suspect that some underlying health issue is causing a deficiency in vitamins or minerals, then you really ought to consult a doctor. It’s necessary to determine whether the root cause is truly a lack of nutrients or perhaps something else entirely.

The reason your body might be lacking a specific substance isn't always just because you aren't eating enough of it. There are various factors at play... maybe it's poor absorption, an excess of another substance that acts as an antagonist, various illnesses, genetic predispositions, or even just excessive loss through other means.

So I should probably get checked out first?

Yes. The body can handle higher doses of vitamins, but minerals are different; the upper limits for daily intake are much stricter. Even multivitamins have to be carefully balanced because of that. You should definitely get your thyroid and other vitals checked first to make sure everything is functioning correctly. Multivitamins won't necessarily hurt you, but they might be completely useless if they aren't addressing your specific issues. Generally, supplements are meant for pregnancy, boosting a weak immune system, managing low body weight, or supporting athletes—basically, when there is a clear physiological need. Find the actual root cause of your hair, skin, nail, or dental issues before relying on pills.
