MRI waiting lists: How to get seen faster?

Does anyone happen to know where I can go with my referral and actually get seen for an MRI relatively quickly? I'm based in Washington, D.C., and I honestly can't find a single place around here that isn't backed up for ages. If anyone knows of a spot outside of the D.C. metro area—maybe in some nearby suburbs or smaller cities—where the wait time isn't a grueling 4 or 5 months, I would be incredibly grateful for the tip!🙂

Medicare actually provides a specific phone line you can call when you need to
track down a scan.
You just dial 01 4595183 or 01 4596184,
leave your full name and a callback number, and they’ll
get in touch. Within a few days, a representative calls you back to let you know where
there's availability and when (this includes private clinics that
are in-network with Medicare).
I haven't tried it myself, but I've heard several people recommend this approach.

In Boise, the wait time is about two and a half months—at least, that’s what I found out when I checked last week.

Look, your best bet is to sit down and start calling around to verify everything before you even think about booking an appointment.
The alternative? Just pay out of pocket and walk right in.

Give the general hospital in Indianapolis a call. Since they just got their new MRI machine up and running, most people probably aren't even aware of it yet, so there shouldn't be much of a wait. 😉

Anyway, while we’re on the subject of MRIs, I had an appointment scheduled at Quest Diagnostics today for a brain MRI with spectroscopy. I show up, only to find out they can't actually perform the spectroscopy part—apparently, they haven't been offering that specific scan for quite some time now. 😠
I mean, seriously? They were organized enough to call me last week to confirm my appointment, yet they couldn't bother to notify me that they wouldn't be able to complete the actual procedure. Damn! 😠
The bottom line is that since I needed an MRI with contrast, I could have just gone to the hospital in Indianapolis and gotten it done there instead.
This is the first time I've dealt with a screw-up like this at Quest Diagnostics. Up until now, everything has been perfectly fine.

I actually called that number from Medicare a while back because I got an email... I felt a little silly doing it, to be honest🙂 I even tried calling the office in Boise, but it was also a total bust—nothing happened before March. It’s been a complete disaster.

Have you looked into any private radiology clinics that take Medicare? I think there’s one over on Martićev that goes by Diagnostics 2000—their website says they accept referrals, so maybe you could get seen sooner there. I heard that if you try to go through Quest Diagnostics using a referral, you might end up waiting several months just for an MRI. Maybe give that clinic over on Nemetov a shot too. I might actually have to get an MRI myself soon, so I'm really curious about how it all works. If you manage to snag an appointment somewhere early, please let me know. Between the private options, I guess I’d personally prefer Quest Diagnostics or Diagnostics 2000.

Quest Diagnostics won't have anything available before March 3rd, and I already gave Diagnostics 2000 a call—they said they aren't accepting referrals right now.

Maybe try giving Nemetov a call; I’m pretty sure they accept referrals for an MRI there. If you check the Diagnostics 2000 homepage, it says they take physician-certified referrals. Are you absolutely certain you spoke with them directly when they told you they wouldn't accept a referral?

In Miami, you’re looking at a month-long wait just to get seen at Quest Diagnostics—but I guess that kind of reality is probably lightyears away from your world.

The whole situation with those private contract clinics is a complete circus. If you’re relying on Medicare, you’re stuck waiting forever, but if you shell out the cash yourself, you can basically walk in within a few days.
I honestly think they’ve completely botched things over at Medicare ☕. It feels like they’re constantly behind on payments or dragging their feet with reimbursements, which is exactly why these endless waiting lists keep popping up.👎

It’s total chaos and a complete mess.
A huge chunk of the private clinics have no idea if they’ll even have a contract for next year.
Take Nemetov, for example. They had openings before, but now they’re fully booked through the end of the year, and as for next year? They’re still completely in the dark.

It sounds like something straight out of a conspiracy movie, but it’s how they set it up. The head of that department, who also happens to be their only employee, is Dr. Dubravko Bajramović.

There is absolutely no way I am ever stepping foot in that place again. To put it bluntly, their report stated that everything looked perfectly fine, completely failing to detect a tumor that was already nearly a centimeter in size. Furthermore, a nurse working with the doctor who reviewed those scans told me later that the physicians here don't particularly trust images coming out of Nemetov because their equipment is subpar.

Honestly, I wouldn’t dream of going to Nemetov for an MRI, even if I might actually need one myself. I know someone who went there earlier this year using their insurance, but the report from their head CT was just... I don't know, it was such a mess. It felt rushed and totally disorganized. I suspect even a neurologist would have had a hard time making sense of how they laid everything out. I saw someone on this forum post a scan from Diagnostics 2000 once—it was an MRI, not a CT—and the report was so much more detailed. It was actually readable, you know? I'm just confused, though, because I think I saw someone mention here that Diagnostics 2000 doesn't take insurance. But according to yesterday's edition of The Washington Post, their own ad says they absolutely accept Medicare, and their website says the exact same thing.

As I mentioned, I had my MRI done over at the Mayo Clinic. My experience with Nemetov has been limited to orthopedics, but I’ve been quite happy with them. Actually, the Akromion clinic runs an orthopedic outpatient wing inside Nemetov, which is where I went for my consultation. The staff is friendly and the doctor is solid. Of course, all this comes with a price tag.

The tumor was completely removed. Six months later, I had to follow up with my neurosurgeon with new scans, so I scheduled an appointment at Nemetov since their wait times are supposedly the shortest. Honestly, I felt like a little kid again when they told me everything looked fine—even the report didn't mention any recurrence.

I managed to get in with the neurosurgeon just under a month later. When I showed up for the check-up, he couldn't believe they had missed it. He spent the whole time pointing at the images, explaining what was what, and expressing total disbelief. The tumor was about 1cm in size.
The reality is that my tumor progresses incredibly fast, so catching a recurrence immediately is absolutely critical.

If they had simply told me, "We aren't certain, please get an MRI with spectroscopy," I wouldn't have complained. Instead, I wasted a month, and then due to a series of unfortunate circumstances, I lost another month. By the time I finally went under the knife, the tumor had doubled in size. 😢

After an experience like that, I wouldn't set foot in there again.

I forgot to mention earlier: they knew everything. I always carry my entire medical history and all my imaging results with me, and quite frankly, that file has become massive.

Has anyone here actually gone through an MRI of the brain at the Mayo Clinic lately? I’m trying to figure out what the damage is going to be like cost-wise and how long the waitlist is looking...
