Hepatitis B vaccination info/discussion

I'm starting to think about getting vaccinated for Hepatitis B...

Where can I actually get this done? Are there any student discounts available, or anything else I should keep in mind before I go?

You can head over to the CDC to get vaccinated.
The vaccine requires a three-dose series.

I know medical students get their shots for free since it's mandatory, but I'm not really sure about everyone else.

...meanwhile, everyone else is shelling out roughly $77 per dose. 😉

And honestly? Just go ahead and get those antibody titers tested. In maybe one out of every ten cases, the vaccine doesn't even hold up anyway.

I actually went to my family doctor to get vaccinated—but I'm wondering about those shots they give kids in elementary school (is that what they call pediatric vaccinations?). Back when the regular school vaccination rounds were happening—since they recently updated the schedule for fifth or sixth graders—I just went ahead and got mine too, but I ended up paying full price out of pocket.

Also, I didn't go back later to get any blood work done, so I'm a bit lost—what's the deal there? How do you even check if the vaccine actually worked or if you're still protected? thx.

So, I went to my doctor to get a referral for a titer test to check my vaccine antibody levels... did the whole thing, and then they hit me with the question: "Well, how long has it been? Like ten years?" They want to know if I actually have immunity against Hepatitis B or if I’m going to need another round of shots...
And you have to deal with the fact that there are three doses required... a lot of people just get one shot and then completely forget about it.
Only after those three doses are finished can you even go in to get your antibody titers checked.

The only people who actually need shots are high-risk groups—you know, doctors, dentists, folks with hemophilia, IV drug users, people with multiple partners... that kind of stuff.

I was born in '84—the last time I remember getting any shots was back in high school, you know, leaving those nasty little scars on your shoulder. I know they've been systematically vaccinating against Hepatitis B for the last few years, but I can't quite remember when that started. Does anyone know? I'm just trying to figure out if I actually caught that one or not. Thanks.

It looks like you probably haven't had the Hepatitis B shot. In the US, routine vaccination in middle school didn't become standard until 1999, and it wasn't until 2007 that we started vaccinating newborns in hospitals. That little scar you mentioned? That’s almost certainly from a TB vaccine. As for tetanus and diphtheria, those boosters usually happen during senior year of high school.

Your best bet is to contact your local CDC office. I believe the cost is roughly around $200, but you'll definitely want to verify that first.

You aren't alone in this. I'm 30, currently doing my internship, and I've already had to take two doses myself.
Since you don't have the record, here is how it works: go see your primary care physician and ask for a Hepatitis B antibody titer test—it's basically a blood test to check for immunity, which even vaccinated people need. Take the referral to a lab like Quest Diagnostics to get your blood drawn; the results should be ready in about a week. Once you have those, take the report to a local public health clinic and request the vaccination series. They will log everything in your official medical record and provide the necessary documentation. You'll likely need three doses total.

Bumping this thread. Right before I moved abroad, I got my first two doses of the hepatitis vaccine, but since I couldn't make it back to the States in time, I missed the third one. It’s been two years now. Do I need to restart the entire series from scratch, or can I just get the third dose now? Or should I just leave it alone?

The medical consensus is pretty clear: to be fully protected, you need all three doses of the Hepatitis B vaccine (though some recent studies suggest certain groups might find coverage with just two). That said, your immunity won't suffer if you deviate from the standard schedule—meaning, if the gap between shots ends up longer than planned. As long as the interval isn't too short, a longer delay won't compromise your protection; you'll end up just as shielded as if you'd followed the timeline perfectly.

There is no need to start over from the beginning. You simply need to get that third, missed dose whenever you can.

If you stop at only two doses, there is a chance your protection will be incomplete.

Check in with a local health official or contact the clinic where you received those first two shots.
