How to convert .docx to .doc (Microsoft Office 2003 to Microsoft Office 2007)

Here’s my little dilemma: I was playing around with a beta version of Microsoft Office 2007, which has since expired on me. While I had it running, Word would automatically save everything in the .docx format. Now that the trial is over, I’ve gone back to using Microsoft Office 2003 Professional. The headache? It won't open any of those .docx files I saved while using the 2007 version! Does anyone know of a reliable converter to fix this? I actually tried a little trick where I renamed the file extensions, but no luck there—I just keep getting an error message saying "word cannot start the converter wpft..."

The easiest workaround? Just grab a machine that actually has that beta installed—run it off a thumb drive or whatever—and use the Save as option to export everything as a .doc or even an .rtf. That way you can actually save your work and then just open and edit it normally in Microsoft Office 2003.

Yeah, I’ve actually been chewing on that exact idea... maybe I could just fire up Microsoft Office 2007, run the file, and then use the "Save as" feature to switch it over to Microsoft Office 2003 format, since that option is right there... but I can't help wondering if there's a dedicated little program out there specifically designed for that task... thanks anyway!

There's actually a program that handles converting those Microsoft Office 2007 files down to the old Microsoft Office 2003 style...
I think it's called something like an Office formats converter
