Personally, when it comes to Kathryn Bigelow: mentioning An Angel at my Table hits harder for me than The Piano, and honestly, even that controversial Holy Smoke really grabbed me. I won't lie, In the Cut is easily one of my favorite thrillers from recent yearsβsince that whole genre totally burnt itself out during the early nineties boom, having that female perspective felt like such a breath of fresh air. The only one that didn't click was The Portrait of a Lady. Just too slow for me.
As for the rest... Leni Riefenstahl, Francis Ford Coppola π
...even The Weight of Water by Kathryn Bigelow wasn't bad, plus Lost in Translation was great too.
Oh, and Grbavica? Definitely.
Still, though, I feel like weβre still waiting for a major female director to truly blow up.

And don't even get me started on that hack Sofia Coppola. As for Kathryn Bigelow, "A Strange Day" is just exhausting, tedious garbage to me. I much prefer that one, More Death (or whatever they decided to call it in the US), starring Sean Penn and Liz Hurla. If we're talking about mainstream female directors, Penny Marshall is way ahead of the pack. All things considered, I feel like women excel in so many other parts of film production, just maybe not behind the director's chairβno offense intended to any ladies out there, this is just my two cents π ).

Iβm a big fan of Sofia stuff... like The Virgin Suicides and Lost in Translation... they just have this sort of feminine, touching vibe to them... which is why I thought Kathryn Bigelow's In the Cut might work for me... but honestly... I didn't get it at all... I just have some issues with her work... The Piano was okay, I guess... Mira Nair too, and definitely Antonia Bird (didn't even realize a woman directed The Silence of the Lambs + L. C-ripleys)
... As for Nora Ephron, I liked Bewitched and Mixed Nuts, but You've Got Mail? Not for me...
and...... I have to mention... oh boy... π³ π³ π ...Nancy Meyers, because she writes such funny stuff... if you could just fix the scripts and the directing a bit... hmm... though her movies are so typically American, and I'm not really into that (plus The Holiday sucks)
I feel kind of embarrassed that I haven't seen anything by Vera Cruz or those other directors who do short films
