I’ve got these soft contact lenses with a one-year expiration date. I only wear them about three days a week—mostly weekends—because, honestly, I can't be bothered with the whole hassle of putting them in and taking them out.

Since I'm not wearing them constantly, will they actually last longer than a year?

I once asked my optometrist about this, since I was wearing glasses intermittently during that stretch while keeping my contacts tucked away in their case. She told me it wasn't worth it... basically saying they have a one-year shelf life and start drying out, losing their elasticity and permeability the second they leave that original sterile packaging. Something like that.

So, I picked up some new contact lenses yesterday. They're 3-month disposables.
The staff told me that wearing them past the expiration date isn't necessarily a huge deal, though they made sure to say I'd be doing it at my own risk. 🙂
To be honest, the last pack of 3-month lenses I had ended up lasting about twice as long as they were supposed to. The result of that "smart" decision was that I spent five minutes struggling just to get them into my eyes because they wouldn't slide in anymore, and my eyes were pretty bloodshot—though, I should mention, that was only because I barely wore them at all.
With this new batch, I’m going to wear them regularly and toss them after three months. Maybe if I skip a week for some reason, I'll stretch it by a few days, but that's about it.

I’ve been sticking to those three-month soft contact lenses for years now, usually just grabbing a bulk pack of four pairs at once.
I’m incredibly meticulous about changing my solution every single day, and honestly, because I take such good care of them, I feel like each pair actually lasts me longer than the recommended three months. It’s not like they start bothering my eyes or anything after the expiration date hits; I only toss them because I don't want to be irresponsible by wearing old lenses for too long. If you do the math, those "one-year" supplies end up lasting me closer to sixteen months. I wear them every single day, from the moment I wake up at 6:30 AM until I finally head to bed around 10 or 11 PM, and my vision hasn't shown any sign of weakening in all this time. It’s a relief, really. What I'm trying to say is, I tend to stretch out the usage period, and so far, I haven't run into a single issue.

Look, I’m saying the same thing—they might extend that deadline, but probably not by much.

I’ve been wearing contact lenses for a little over a year now, and my prescription HAS FINALLY stabilized. Before this, it just kept climbing year after year.

Honestly, back when I was stuck wearing glasses, my prescription seemed to be skyrocketing out of control. But ever since I made the switch to contact lenses... they’ve been an absolute game-changer for me. My vision has finally stabilized.

They might last slightly longer if you take excellent care of them, but that isn't really due to how often you wear them. I use monthly lenses myself, and they frequently last me about six weeks. I don't usually track my exact start dates, but you'll notice when they need replacing—your vision gets a bit blurry, loses its edge, or they start to feel irritating in your eye. That's my signal to toss them and grab a fresh pair.

mistybison, where on earth are you getting those from after only a month, and what's the actual brand name?🙂

You can find monthly contact lenses in pretty much any local eyewear shop. There's a huge variety of brands out there, and I guess prices vary quite a bit depending on what you're looking for.

I make sure to change the solution every single day, so honestly, each pair probably lasts me a bit longer than the standard three months. I don't find them uncomfortable even after the expiration date passes, but I toss them anyway simply because it feels wrong to wear old lenses for too long. It works out that my yearly supply actually stretches over about sixteen months. I wear them every day, from 6:30 in the morning until late, sometimes 10 or 11 at night, and my vision hasn't degraded one bit over the years. I suppose that's a good sign. My point is, I extend their lifespan slightly and I haven't run into any issues.

Which brand of lenses are you using?
After wearing lenses for about eight hours, my eyes start itching like crazy.👎

Johnson & Johnson
Honestly, I’ve never dealt with itchy eyes myself—I guess everyone reacts differently to these things. You could give it a shot, though you might just get lucky.

Noemi said:Nymph, where have you been buying those for the last month and what brand are they?🙂

I get mine from my eye doctor, who also runs a private boutique for glasses, contact lenses, solutions, and everything else. I believe mine are Johnson & Johnson Vision. To be honest, I never really gave much thought to the specific brand—I just grabbed whatever he recommended, and I’ve been happy with them so far. They aren't expensive either, costing about $55 for a six-month supply, though they usually last me even longer. There are so many different types out there, so your best bet is to see an ophthalmologist for an exam; they can advise you on which type will work best for your eyes. For instance, I could never handle the annual lenses the original poster mentioned. Even after switching doctors and brands, my left eye produces fewer tears than my right, causing the lens to fog up constantly. With these current ones, I don't have any issues at all (it's likely due to a different material composition). I put them in and completely forget they're there. A few times now, I've actually started taking off my makeup before remembering I was still wearing contacts. 😬 It goes to show that if you run into trouble, it might just be the specific brand or type. Not every lens works for everyone.

My eyes start itching terribly after about eight hours with my contacts.👎

That shouldn't be happening. Could it be the solution? I currently use Ren (Bausch & Lomb), but I once ruined my eyes with a different brand back when I was trying out those year-long lenses. It turned out I was actually allergic to a specific ingredient in that solution. My eyes were just as itchy and irritated then.

Johnson & Johnson Vision lenses are solid👍...I wore some of theirs for about two months..
but now I’ve switched to Biomedics and they are honestly a total game changer. I never get that dry eye feeling with these, which used to be a huge issue for me...that's actually why I couldn't stick with the old ones for even a full year.🙄
