Trumpet lessons

Hey everyone,

I need a hand here: does anyone know of a trumpet course for someone starting from zero???

Ideally somewhere in Washington, D.C. 🙂

Any info at all would be appreciated...

So, does anyone actually know if there’s a school out there, maybe something like a Berklee style academy, where you can actually learn the trumpet...
Has anyone here actually tried teaching themselves how to play...

From what I gather, you can pretty much sign up for any music academy you fancy—though, obviously, there’s going to be a price tag attached to that.

So, what gives? Is the internet giving you a hard time or something?

Look, just head over to the music academy near the start of Broadway, find out who’s teaching trumpet, and go talk to him directly. Ask if he'd be willing to sit down with you and teach you the basics of the instrument.

Yeah, I actually asked about that too, but they just told me I was way too old—I was only 25 at the time 🙂 It’s a different story with the double bass, though. Those guys were super welcoming and easy to talk to 🙂

There used to be an adult education program over at Carnegie Hall, though I’m not entirely sure if they still offer it these days.
In my opinion, you might be much better off just hiring a local musician for some private lessons. Most formal music schools force you to sit through tedious classes on music theory, ear training, and chamber music, which isn't really what you're looking for. It would probably be more efficient to find a talented student from Juilliard who would be happy to give you some one-on-one instruction for a much more reasonable price.

That’s basically what I was thinking too, it's just that I don't really know anyone in those circles... but I'll give it a shot.

What's gotten into you? You actually want to learn the trumpet? 😲

Look, you can't just pick up a trumpet and expect to be band-ready within a year...
It’s a long-term grind, much like training for a marathon. You have to build up those specific lip muscles just to hit the right notes. If you want a consistent, beautiful tone, you're looking at putting in at least two hours of practice every single day...

I’d honestly suggest checking out some instruments that don't require as much breath control; you might see progress a lot faster. But if you’re dead set on wind instruments, maybe try something with a reed, like a sax or a clarinet. You'll likely find the learning curve a bit more forgiving...

(I’ve been playing trumpet for years now, so trust me, I know how brutal it can be)😛
