Spontaneous enthusiasm.

I’ve never actually seen this movie before, but I picked up the DVD based on recommendations from people I actually trust—plus, I have a soft spot for the mafia genre. It didn't disappoint. I had a pretty good time over those 110 minutes or so; Gabriel Byrne is excellent in the lead role, and the supporting cast—including John Turturro and Albert Finney—is just as solid.

The soundtrack is great, the cinematography is beautiful (thanks to Barry Sonnenfeld), and honestly, I'd recommend it to any crime genre fans, or even just casual viewers.

Watched it ages ago, but I’m with you on this one. Absolute classic.

So, I head over to this legendary video rental shop in downtown Chicago about a year ago, hunting for that specific movie. The clerk there basically tells me, "Look, it's a masterpiece, but we don't carry it—you'll have to hunt elsewhere." Well, I've been looking ever since, and I haven't even been able to track down a decent digital rip on any streaming site... 😢

Brilliant, absolutely brilliant! This was all before the brothers ever crossed paths with George Clooney and things went completely off the rails! 🙏 🙏 🙏

Unfortunately, I haven't seen it yet😢

I have to say, though—Barton Fink still stands out as their absolute best🙏 🙏

The Coen brothers are absolute legends. If you haven't seen a single one of their flicks yet, consider this your mandatory reading list:

1. The Big Lebowski
2. Miller's Crossing
3. Barton Fink
4. Fargo
5. Arizona
6. junior 6. mr. Hullahopp
7. O Brother, Where Art Thou?

Then you can actually have an opinion on them. 😁

There was a time when the Coen brothers were just cranking out incredible movies... back then, they were easily considered some of the most talented filmmakers in America. I’ve always been a huge fan of theirs, though honestly, I can't even pick a single favorite... if I had to narrow it down, I'd probably say Fargo, Barton Fink, or O Brother, Where Art Thou? would be in my top tier.
Then 2003 rolled around, and Intolerable Cruelty hit theaters. A total disaster. Just a complete flop.
But I figured, hey, even the best of the best can have an off night... one bad movie doesn't define a career.
Then came Ladykillers in 2004. It wasn't quite the train wreck that I. C. was, but it definitely didn't hold a candle to their earlier stuff.
Now, the brothers are actually admitting they're hitting a bit of a creative wall... like they aren't quite sure which direction to take next.
Right now, they've got two projects in the works: Hail Caesar and No Country for Old Men.
I'm really keeping a close eye on how this all plays out... fingers crossed.

You're all talking about the Coen brothers, yet nobody seems to mention Blood Simple... 😕

That was intentional.
It's their first one (if I recall correctly), and honestly, it doesn't really deserve the hype. I watched it ages ago and just couldn't get into it. Still, it's probably better than 75% of the other movies out there.😁

Given how many movies get made every year, that doesn't actually say much, does it?🥳

I’m going to quote myself from a previous post about Ladykillers:

...I'm trying to dig up a specific memory from the movie but it's just not happening. With Intolerable Cruelty, at least I remember feeling totally let down. But with Ladykillers? Nothing. The Coen brothers were living their best cinematic lives, and then Intolerable Cruelty hit them like a ton of bricks—not some glamorous or revolutionary exit under a spotlight, either. It felt more like an old guy telling a stale joke and groaning. To me, Ladykillers feels like that weird sensation of people who claim they've seen the afterlife. Is there one? What's it like? The answer is: I have no clue. I don't remember. All I recall is some bright light cutting through the dark (the theater screen)...

....
Honestly, I think brightscout63 is being unforgivable by lecturing everyone on the Coen brothers' filmography while leaving Blood Simple off the list and putting mr. Hullahopp instead ttttt ;-) ..
...
And as for what's next, looks like they handed the directing duties for 'Suburbicon' over to a clown. 😁😁

Not lecturing anyone here. Hullahop is just better... deal with it. 🙂 😁

If you ask me, this crisis has been dragging on since the days of Intolerable Cruelty. It’s just that they managed to mask it pretty well with

Go rewatch some Barry Sonnenfeld. You might actually be surprised. ;-)

A Hulahup is one thing, but Hulahup leggings are a whole different beast. Honestly, I’m into both.😬
I think BS is decent, but since it didn't make my top 5, the Coen brothers just have to live with that.😁

Personally, I think Blood Simple is solid. If it didn't make my top 5, the Coen brothers just have to live with that. 😁

It's not a top 5, it's more like 7... plus, looking at your list, you skipped 'The Man Who Wasn't There' but included 'O Brother, Where Art Thou?'.
Lucky for you the Coens aren't reading this, otherwise they'd tell you your whole list is garbage—they don't mess around. 😁😁 ....
