Look, if you actually want to be considered cool on this forum, you basically need to shut up, sit down, and kiss some serious ass here--😁

1. Post-punk bands, led by The Fall

2. Generally anything punk pre-1978, specifically focusing on The Clash and the Buzzcocks

3. A solid grasp of the American underground—think Husker Du (on SST Records), Mission of Burma, and those Dischord bands

4. The bands that paved the way for grunge... Sonic Youth, Pixies, Dinosaur Jr., Pavement, and all their various incarnations

That’s your foundation.😁
Moving on:

Nirvana, Radiohead, and At The Drive-In are treated like the holy trinity of nineties mainstream, while Slint and Big Black represent the absolute peak of the underground. Basically, when it comes to that decade, you have to stay current on everything released by the folks who were actually relevant back in the eighties... it's mandatory.

This is where the forum splits into two distinct camps... one side goes crazy for sweat, pop-rock, and metal alongside all that "cool" stuff I just listed, while the more sensitive crowd clings to indie and Americana releases—you know, stuff like The National or Arcade Fire.

But they actually agree on one thing: most of them think Franz Ferdinand (and then Block Party, The Editors, etc.) is essentially the ultimate musical law.

Prog and jazz? Not really a vibe here.
