I mean, you could totally grab one of those all-in-one home gym setups at a place like Dick's Sporting Goods or even just order one online. You know, those 5-in-1 things where you've got the lat pulldown bar hanging from above and then those little ankle weights for leg days... it's basically the same deal, just way cheaper since it's not doing quite as much, I guess. And, uh, should I be getting into protein shakes too?image

I mean, you can definitely get a workout in if the equipment actually holds up—the one in the photo looks decent enough (though I can't tell how the weight is distributed. If it's all pulleys and cables, stay away). For instance, I picked up this little setup for about $500, but it uses a cable and pulley system. The issue is that the movement isn't smooth at all. You kind of have to jerk the weight to get it moving, and then it just flies up. There’s a massive difference between home gear and the heavy-duty stuff you see at a real gym. Honestly, at home, I'd rather just grab two 20-pound dumbbells or a 50-pound barbell than mess around with a clunky machine. You can get *something* done on it, sure, but it's not quite the same. Either go for high-quality gear or just stick to the gym...

The one in this photo looks okay, I guess—though I’m honestly not sure how the weight transfer works. If it’s just some cheap cable and pulley system, it’s probably not gonna be great. For example, I bought this little setup for about $500, but the whole mechanism relies on a cable and a pulley. The real issue is that the resistance isn't smooth at all. You basically have to jerk the weight to get it moving, and then it feels way too light once it starts. It’s nothing like the heavy-duty machines you see at a real Gold's Gym. Honestly, I’d rather just grab two 20-pound dumbbells or a 50-pound barbell and call it a day than mess around with that machine. I mean, you could probably get *something* out of it, but it's just not the same. It’s either go for a legit, pro-grade machine or just hit up a proper gym.

But wait, if it's not using pulleys, how else would the weight even move?

Chloe King4 said:So if we aren't using pulleys, what kind of drive system should we be looking at?

At most gyms, you’ve got those machines with a roughly two-inch wide "strap" that basically weights itself against some metal rod—or maybe it's through fixed pulleys, I can't quite remember... but the feeling is pretty much the same as just picking up a dumbbell and lifting it manually.

The cable feels way too stretchy to me, and the way it tracks over those plastic pulleys is just weird. You often have one single cable running through three different pulleys, which creates this jerky, snapping motion... honestly, it's a quick way to wreck your joints.

Listen, friends—forget those overpriced machines and pulley systems; you aren't going to build any real mass with them. ☕

If you actually want to see results, just grab an Olympic barbell and a ton of plates—then we'll see what happens.
