Was Walt Disney actually a director?

The situation is actually pretty straightforward!
Back in school, a buddy and I were playing that game "Who Am I?" (you know, the one where you stick a name on someone's forehead and they have to guess who they are by asking questions—hopefully you guys get the concept). Anyway, my friend stuck Walt Disney on my head. So, I start digging, eventually narrowing it down to someone who isn't alive, an American, and someone involved in the movie business.
- "Do they direct?" I ask.
- "Yeah," he says.
So then I started rattling off names like Kubrick, Francis Ford Coppola, and who knows what else, but I couldn't nail it. Once I finally lost, we ended up having this massive, ridiculous argument over whether Walt Disney actually directed his own cartoons or not.

Does anyone actually know the answer to that?

But I know how you're going to tip off your buddy. Just write "Damir Poša" on his forehead and tell him it’s an American singer-songwriter. That should get him guessing all the way to Milodarev.

Or just slap a "Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar" label on him ☕

I actually managed to mess with him too. I set his profile picture to the Dalai Lama and he actually had the nerve to ask if he was from China. I just cracked up and told him—no, 😁 FREE TIBET 😁

Back then, they didn't have massive production pipelines where you’d have 100 different people assigned to a single animated feature. It was much more hands-on; I guess most of it was just one person doing everything.

They were basically writing the script, directing, animating, producing, and everything else in between (maybe two people at most, if you're lucky...)

If you're talking about short films, then yeah, absolutely.
But when it comes to the full-length features, she was working with a massive crew—just look at the production team behind The Walt Disney Company's Snowhit (1937).

When you're putting an animated feature together, the lead animator—which used to be the case with Disney—is usually basically acting as the director too.
