a, I found the film beautiful, but Hero is just so much betterβ€”you can't really escape that comparison πŸ™‚ a, besides, I'm a total sucker for those highly visual movies; I love getting lost in a gorgeous scene πŸ™‚

In any case, it's worth a watch.

Seriously fun. You absolutely have to catch this one on the big screen.

I don't know, though... I think I actually liked Hero a bit more.

Honestly, I think Hero is better... it’s way more layered and fleshed out. It actually has what this movie was missingβ€”a point.

And if we're talking about the most genius thing I've seen latelyβ€”not just from the yellow filmmakerπŸ˜‰ but compared to the entire global film industryβ€”it’s Oldboy. I just had to mention that avant-garde masterpiece, it's easily the best thing I've watched so farπŸ™ (sorry for going off-topic), there's nothing like it because it was the FIRST one to ever do it like that.πŸ‘

It's an American production, by the way.πŸ˜‰ β˜•

If this movie doesn't show up ASAP, my theater is going to turn into the House of Flying Daggers...πŸ™‚

🀣 Exactly! You absolutely have to see this. πŸ˜‚

But the actual plot? It loses me every single time. In my opinion, those classic old-school martial arts flicks had much tighter stories. A master gets killed, the student goes on a revenge mission, and boomβ€”that's the movie! Simple! But these newer ones? Nothing really happens. They just travel around, bicker, kiss, and then die. Who knows... it's just not my cup of tea.

"The Ice Storm", "Sense and Sensibility", "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon"

– directed by Ang Lee (A Japanese person? umm... definitely not!)

"Raise the Red Lantern", "Hero", "House of Flying Daggers"

– directed by Zhang Yimou... I'm pretty sure he isn't Japanese either!

yay!!! 🀣

My thoughts.....

Usually, I'm all about the kung fu stuff... and those kinds of vibes, but House of Flying Daggers... just didn't hit the mark for me..

Here's why......

It tries way too hard to be romantic, but it totally misses the vibe..
Zhang Yimou always feels kind of cold to me....
That ending where she sacrifices herself for him....(I actually burst out laughing when I saw Zhang getting up from the snow... man, talk about overacting)....Like, seriously, don't scrape your leg just to make it bleed......πŸ‘Ž πŸ‘Ž
That bamboo fight scene... wasn't really my thing...
The drum dance..... honestly, such a bore...
Tons of plot holes too.....
And way too much chaos during the final showdown....

Some good parts though.......

Takeshi... as the lead guy... was definitely the best part of the whole movie
Those opening fights (hand-to-hand, no weapons)
The use of bow and arrow...
πŸ™‚

All in all, I won't be watching this again.

It’s a mistake to judge movies from other cultures through your own lens. You gotta stay open to new ideas and different ways of seeing the world.
Even if you still end up hating the movie, at least you gave it a shot. 😁

Man!
I’ve got this movie on DivX spread across two discs, 25 bitrate. The headache is that I absolutely cannot find any subtitles that actually sync up correctly. 😡 It feels like the runtime on my specific discs is totally different from every single subtitle file I’ve tried downloading so far (and trust me, I've searched a ton). The real kicker is that I don't speak a word of Chinese, which makes trying to manually line everything up in Subtitle Workshop an absolute nightmare. πŸ™‚ 😠

And I am dying to watch this... 😒
So if anyone happens to know a fix for this, I would be seriously grateful... πŸ‘

Directed by Ang Lee (A Japanese person? Umm... definitely not!)

So, we're talking about the heavy hitters... "Raise the Red Lantern," "Hero," and "House of Flying Daggers"... basically the holy trinity of visual storytelling. Seriously though...

Directed by Zhang Yimou... pretty sure he's not even a Japanese person either!

Hell yeah!!! 🀣

It honestly scares me to think what you actually consider "knowledge"... if you're really gonna call someone uninformed just because they don't know every single director's credits... seriously...
I mean, I think God is still gonna judge you for that...😁 πŸ˜‰

Look, the movie is gorgeous to look at, but honestly? It’s completely useless...
If anyone actually thinks otherwise, feel free to hit me with an argument that proves there's more to this than just eye candy... I'm waiting...πŸ˜‰

I mean, let’s be real, The Ice Storm and Hero are absolute bangers... no debate there!πŸ‘

The first third is excellent, and the rest remains quite solid. While the storytelling is great, I still believe Zhang Yimou's absolute finest work was produced in the early nineties.

No bars in Miami? πŸ˜•

Well, unfortunately, there aren't any real ones in the movies. 😁😁So now I have to trek all the way to New York just to catch a movie... what a joke.πŸ˜•

But these newer ones? Nothing really happens. They just travel around, flirt, make out, and then die. I don't know... it's just not my thing.

What more is there to say when the man has already laid it all out? You get these crazy fight scenes tossed in just so it qualifies as an "action movie," but the director spends way too much time obsessing over romance as the main driver. When I'm in the mood for this stuff, I'd rather just watch a whirlwind. Amen.

brightgull15 said:When I'm stuck watching movies like this, I just opt for a whirlwind instead. Amen.

Well... if we're being honest, this is actually even better! It’s basically the wuxia version of a whirlwind. Instead of Scarlett O'Hara taking out some dirty hillbillies with a pistol, she just pretends she's going to give them what they want, starts stripping, and passionately tears her dress off. Then she leaps into the air, performs a triple mortal flip over the guys, and sends one flying straight through a wall from the sheer force of the impact. Meanwhile, the other guy throws two knives at onceβ€”tracking blades that magically change direction mid-airβ€”but then Scarlett kicks the projectiles away, flips a rug, and the shockwave travels through the carpet to knock over two more guys who tumble down the stairs. BESTEST MOVIE EVAR, MAN!!111!!11one

In all seriousness, though, House of Flying Daggers was fine, but it didn't quite hit the heights of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon or Hero. As far as the flying goes, that's perfectly standard for the wuxia genre they belong to, much like how gunfights are standard for an action flick. Americans have been reading wuxia novels for ages.

For something a bit more grounded among Asian historical martial arts films, I’d recommend Mouseβ€”I saw it back when it was playing in theaters and I genuinely enjoyed it: the cast, the fights, the bond between a small group of people helping each other out... that sort of thing.

There's probably a thread about this somewhere on the forum, but I really can't be bothered to look for it.

I caught it on the big screen at a local boutique cinema over Easter break. A cozy recliner, a cold beer in hand... things like that. 😁

Don't give me that... 😁😁...I'll give you the comfy chair part, since I've definitely lost count of how many movies I've watched in one, but the screen isn't exactly IMAX size.😁😁...
