So, I was wondering—is there any truth to the rumor that Les Claypool played bass
on a track for Deliverance when he was only 14 years old, and actually ended up winning an Oscar for it?

I've been spinning the three I have right now (Sailing..., Pork Soda, and Tales...)
Still trying to track down the rest of them.

Besides Les Claypool, I honestly think the rest of the guys deserve way more credit. You rarely find a guitarist willing to dive into arrangements like this 😁, and man, that drumming is just insane...

I'm gonna go poke around Les's page; looks like a new record might actually see the light of day soon (by which I mean the Les Claypool + Buckethead + Brain + Bernie project).

Look, just so you don't keep stressing over this. It's not true. That movie theme was actually done by Eric Weissberg, and there wasn't any Oscar involved. Plus, Les was only about 9 years old when that film was being made. 😎

I recently picked up some Les Claypool's Frog Brigade... though I noticed some places list it as 'Frog' and others call it 'Forg Brigade.'

Tommy The Cat was pretty much the first Primus track I ever heard... and yeah, Jerry too... just pure nostalgia 😢 ...

Yeah, for me, nothing beats that first live set where they played all the hits 🙂

Plus, reading up on some of the band members is actually pretty entertaining. I remember seeing that Larry used to play in Possessed, and they had such an incredible album, Beyond The Gates. Back when Les Claypool’s first album dropped, I was reading Metal Hammer and saw they were mentioning how Lars Ulrich and the rest of the guys were looking at him to fill Cliff Burton's shoes. I can't quite recall if he actually showed up for the audition or if he just turned them down with a shrug 😬 because, from what I heard, Jason Rogers ended up stepping in for Les during those Flotsam sessions instead... 🙂

Back in 1986, following the passing of Metallica bassist Cliff Burton, Les Claypool went in to audition for the gig. There’s always been this rumor floating around that he didn't land the role simply because his playing style was considered "too funky" for their direction. In Metallica's Behind the Music, Claypool said that during the audition he wanted the others to jam on some Isley Brothers tunes, which happened after Lars Ulrich asked him if he wasn't really used to playing this kind of music. Even James Hetfield chimed in with a joke, suggesting that Claypool missed out on the job because "he was too good."
