Wedding playlist ideas?

Listen, dustyridge12! Here’s a little breakdown of how the music went at my wedding:

Before the ceremony began—while everyone was finding their seats and the groomsmen were lighting the candles:
1) Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah
2) Bob Dylan - Every Grain of Sand

The bride's entrance:
3) The Beatles - In My Life (I actually requested a custom remix with an extended instrumental section just to dial up the drama)

The moment the bride was handed over to the groom and they lit the candle:
4) Fairport Convention - Now Be Thankful

Right after the kiss:
5) A traditional folk dance, though I personally would have pushed for Dolly Parton / Kenny Rogers - Islands in the Stream—but the bride wasn't having it.

The congratulations and the guests exiting the church (my favorite part):
6) The Gun Club - Sex Beat

Of course, a Catholic church would probably have some issues with most of these choices—especially The Gun Club—so if you're planning something similar, I'd suggest doing it outside the sanctuary or, like we did, at a Protestant ecumenical chapel where the minister happened to be a huge Bob Dylan fan.

I’m definitely not doing a church ceremony; that kind of formal program is just not my style. What’s actually weighing on my mind is the reception later on. We decided to go with a DJ, mostly because we’re dealing with limited space and a budget. I keep hearing horror stories about weddings, and everyone’s giving me unsolicited advice on how to prevent a total disaster, so I guess I’ll just have to play it by ear. One thing I know for sure, though: you can never please everyone. There will always be those people who are having the time of their lives and those who think everything is just lame.

Oh wow. Just wow. Jeff Buckley, DYLAN, and then... folk music. Unbelievable.

I don't think a wedding like that could ever happen in a traditional American church, but since you can just do a civil ceremony wherever you want now, there's hope for people who refused to endure years of religious schooling and mandatory church services just to get confirmed.

Is there even a band out there that can set a decent mood without forcing people at a wedding to endure endless polka or some other weird, frantic nonsense?
In all my years of dragging myself to weddings, I haven’t seen it happen once.

I was just wondering what my own wedding would look like, if I ever actually have one... I guess a solid DJ who actually knows how to pick songs everyone likes would be a total win. But honestly, why follow the crowd? Everyone should be allowed to throw their party exactly how they want.

I’ve never actually been to a party where I could say the music was even decent... and honestly, I’m starting to think that might be an impossible standard to meet... which is why I just skipped out, along with avoiding teleportation and that one movie from five years ago.

Haha, just remembered this guy from a small town in Ohio telling me about a party where they had a folk band covering Nirvana.

It exists, friend. But only in Cleveland. Around here, you just go to an agency (not naming names, don't want to advertise), ask for a specific kind of band, and they'll hook you up with someone perfect—someone you'll probably end up hearing at the next wedding or party the following Saturday. It takes the guesswork out of the music, everyone stays happy, and the band usually picks up another gig or two from that crowd over the next year. Trust me, it works. 👍

I recently witnessed this wedding situation involving two people, maybe thirty years old, who held this massive, formal ceremony for all their relatives and extended family, and then—get this—they decided the following Saturday they wanted to host a sort of "remake" wedding just for their own inner circle of about fifty friends... so they rented out a hunting lodge and even had a custom cake made, which was shaped like a marriage bed with a Ken doll sprawled out between the bride Barbie's legs 🙂... and they actually approached me (an old, seasoned DJ, if you could call me that... 🙂 ) to handle the music for them.
They were absolutely thrilled—those were their words, not mine, I have no desire to sound overly self-important—and the whole crowd danced all night long; I played everything from local hits to international tracks, and it was all for a mere
five bucks. The point I am trying to make is that a competent DJ will find the right vibe and actually get people moving because they cater to what the crowd actually enjoys, which means you won't end up with a disaster like that one rapper 🙂
A DJ should, naturally, inquire about the musical preferences beforehand, prepare a solid repertoire accordingly, and then there shouldn't be any issues at all...
If, on top of that, you can somehow engineer a decent live band for a reasonable price, everyone wins—though honestly, karaoke is always a hilarious way to stir things up...
For instance, what NoWa suggested sounds absolutely phenomenal to me...
And by the way, in my humble opinion, paying 300 Dollars for a DJ is quite overpriced...

I feel like $300 is a bit steep too, but they're telling us that’s just the standard rate for a solid DJ. That doesn't even include the sound system (the basic setup is $267, and then two extra rooms will run us $333).

Looking at a $300 price tag... honestly, that’s probably the absolute ceiling you could squeeze out of someone, and even then, you’d have to be booking one of the top-tier American DJs—and I’m talking real drum & bass artists, not this other stuff... though when it comes to the actual vibe of the set, since you’ll likely want to play for a broad crowd rather than just hammering one single genre all night long, it’s actually quite difficult to pinpoint who the "best" is... because those specific types of performers aren't really household names compared to, say, the dedicated drum & bass DJs who have established a massive, loyal following right here in New York City, where it's easy to tell who the heavy hitters are. And frankly, even the best of that lot in the States would be more than thrilled to take $300... so I have no idea who convinced you that this is some kind of AVERAGE 😲 fee, but they were quite mistaken

Well, look, I spin sets over at KEXP and Aquarius, but naturally, that's only possible because I have everything I need there—from the technical gear to the setup—and while I couldn't tell you the exact rental costs, my crew would definitely know where to find high-quality gear without breaking the bank. Theoretically, I could just grab a mixer and call it a day, provided I actually had 92346032596 massive speakers sitting around my house... which I don't

I’m getting married this July—finally! Woohoo!
We definitely aren't starting a band together, though.
Personally, I’m rooting for a mix of Muse and Gossip—that would just be perfect.
We’re still debating what our walk-in song should be; when I step out into the garden, where the ceremony is set to happen, I can't decide which track will capture the right vibe.
For the first dance, we went with that classic romantic number from Dirty Dancing... honestly, it's just so sweet.
At the end of the day, it’s our moment, plain and simple.
