Honestly, it was pretty weak.

I’m not even gonna get into the craziness of hundreds of American soldiers just trekking into Austria just to liven things up back in 1943. The real issue is the movie just lacks actual characters and atmosphere.

Everything had potential—Stark, that hot British officer—but it all fell flat.👎
There's this guy with a mustache and some Chinese person in there too, but they didn't bother fleshing them out at all...🤷
PS
Natalie Dormer looks incredibly sexy with that blonde hair; she's basically the only bright spot in the whole thing, along with that scene where Captain America gives his speech to the troops.

Captain America: The First Avenger 8.5/10 http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0458339/

This is a truly fantastic setup for The Avengers, which we can expect next year.
Chris Evans is excellent (it seems he learned a thing or two from the Fantastic Four films), though the entire cast did a great job. Captain America is definitely better than Thor, but in my opinion, X-Men: First Class takes the title for the best Marvel film.
Even without seeing it, I’m sure Green Lantern is worse than those three, mostly because there is nothing I dislike more than a superhero who doesn't take themselves seriously.

brightbadger54 said:I wouldn't go that far. To me, the movie really highlights how much Americans seemingly can't stomach the idea of being outmatched by Nazis during the World War. In this film, it’s practically one American soldier taking down twenty Nazis, whereas in the actual war, the ratio was closer to thirty Americans for every one Nazi. That was my only real gripe—it feels like Hollywood always tries to flip the script when depicting real conflicts where they didn't come out on top, almost as if it's driven by some sort of collective frustration. The whole point of the story felt lost to me once I realized the entire thing just revolved around tallying up how many Nazis an American soldier could kill on screen; the narrative essentially devolved into a cheap scoreboard. It felt rather pointless.

It honestly tanked the quality of the film for me. I felt more of this sense of American resentment and obsession than any connection to the comic or the artistry of filmmaking itself. Sometimes, regardless of how great an American movie might be, you can tell it's just radiating desperation. You see the same thing today with modern war-themed PC games.

Jesus, what kind of nonsense are you complaining about? It's obvious that aside from that one scene where prisoners escape (where we clearly see them dying), Captain America spends the rest of the film beating the hell out of every Nazi in sight.

Besides, when you have a crowd of enemies all huddling behind cover while a big guy in a bright red, white, and blue suit charges straight at you, who are they going to shoot? It’s basic psychology: everyone aims for our hero because he looks like the biggest and most immediate threat, leaving his friends to pick off the Nazis like they're sitting ducks at a shooting range.

I mean, honestly, the casualty rates for Americans and Germans during their clashes were always going to be somewhat comparable. The Germans were mostly defending their own turf and had gear sitting right there ready to go (whereas the Americans had to ship everything over from England), so the ratio might have leaned slightly more toward them, but it was never anywhere near 30-to-1.
But what we're seeing here is textbook American propaganda. Not surprising for a movie that basically functions as Captain Obvious, but man, it was ridiculous.
You've got four Americans charging at Nazis with an automatic rifle—three of them drop, but the fourth one somehow reaches him and just beats him down...
First off, nobody is running empty-handed at a guy with an automatic weapon (just look at recent massacres in places like Norway)—and second, why does this last starving, exhausted prisoner suddenly become a master of hand-to-hand combat against an elite Nazi?
I was hoping for a bit more World War II realism, but hey, the movie is still plenty watchable.

Plus, when you've got a whole crowd of enemies just standing behind some cover, and this massive guy in a bright red, white, and blue suit comes charging at you, who are you actually going to shoot at? It's pure psychology—everyone aims for our hero because he looks like the biggest, most immediate threat, which leaves his friends facing Nazis that act like clay pigeons at a shooting range.

Not to mention the Nazis are just standing there like idiots in the open, firing one shot at a time.
Standard military doctrine dictates that you'd cover an open field with multiple machine guns and heavy artillery. Instead, these guys are standing around like morons, popping off single shots. They didn't even have bunkers or sandbags (apparently anti-personnel mines were too expensive for this budget...).

And another thing—who on earth uses short-range flamethrowers like that? What is even the point of that weapon?

I caught that movie yesterday; it was decent enough, I suppose, meeting my rather modest expectations. I find myself agreeing with most of your critiques—there are a few ridiculous moments, like when he falls from the plane and somehow manages to pull himself back up, which feels a bit excessive even for Captain America, though I'll admit it looks impressive, and that American accent trying to sound German is just painful, but overall, the film is perfectly fine.

That said, the best superhero flick we've seen in recent years is definitely X-Men: First Class.

I thought the movie was pretty decent overall—just a fun, breezy adventure that hits all those classic Marvel beats you'd expect.
The ending felt a little bit ironic to me, though.

It honestly cracks me up when people try to lecture everyone here about ratios or the morality of taking out Nazis. Look, kids, this is an American movie based on an American comic book from an American publisher called Captain America.

Because of that, you should probably watch this film as a way to just zone out for two hours or whatever, rather than treating it like some deep philosophical treatise or a piece of American propaganda. The title itself screams propaganda; I don't quite get why anyone would bother watching it just to come here and complain about it afterward.

Just take a look at the other movies from the same studio (Thor, Iron Man, etc.) and tell me those aren't meant purely for entertainment and nothing else.

To crowd complaining about historical inaccuracies. I’ll probably get flagged for this, but you people are absolute idiots. 🤦

Great movie and a solid setup for The Avengers. The acting is top-tier; Jones is a powerhouse. 🙏 High-octane action, a straightforward plot with just enough humor. Even the romance works—it stays on the periphery where it belongs in an action flick, yet still manages a somewhat unexpected twist.

Look, my point wasn't about the plot or the history being off. It was about the lack of actual movement and characters that feel real.

The movie was alright... I didn't go in with super high expectations, so I wasn't really disappointed or anything... It works for T. L. Jones and maybe that slightly unexpected ending, but honestly, the whole thing just drags on a bit too long...

I’m seriously impressed with how they handled the comic book adaptation. They absolutely nailed the vibe right from the jump. Now, I'm just counting down the days until The Avengers roll around. 🙂

WARNING!!!

Whatever you do, don't click this link before watching Captain America: The First Avenger. Seriously. I made the mistake of doing it, and now the whole movie just feels like a joke to me. 😁

As for the plot—it’s basically: "Listen, son... for the sake of the world's future, listen to your mother... your father is dying... anyway, I'm an American." 🤣

In all seriousness, the movie itself is fine. It's okay. Nothing special.

What a pleasant surprise. 🙏

There’s zero depth here—it’s pure entertainment. But what it nails is that specific comic book vibe and those old-school adventure movie feels that most superhero flicks completely miss. Way better than I was expecting. Red Skull works great as a villain.

And definitely better than Thor.

Why do they keep pushing that Adolf Hitler stuff? I mean, seriously, what the hell 🤣 could they have done to at least handle it properly.

It’s just this pathological need for political correctness. If you actually pay attention, you won't even see a single swastika in the movie, and most of the action takes place in Europe during World War II.

Honestly, what an absolute joke of a movie. They completely botched this character's portrayal. When he’s supposed to be lean and athletic, they made him look so unnatural; it just looks fake and cheap. The special effects are pretty much a disaster across the board—nothing feels grounded. That one scene where he's chasing after the car? Truly painful to watch. I honestly don't understand how movies can still be released today with such subpar visual effects. As for the lead, he's just totally lacking charisma. It's a shame. The only saving grace is that red lubanja. That actor is genuinely brilliant and stands head and shoulders above the rest of the cast. If they hadn't pushed this whole narrative about everything tying together into one big franchise, probably half the audience would have skipped these mediocre films entirely. The first Iron Man was a masterpiece, and these other silly attempts don't even come close. It actually makes me nervous to think about what The Avengers might end up looking like eventually.

The movie was decent enough, I guess, but nothing to write home about. It’s packed with action, the cast actually puts in some work, and the plot holds up okay... there are definitely some logic gaps here and there, but honestly, who cares? It’s not like it ruins everything. The ending is left wide open, just like pretty much every other Marvel flick, so you know they're already cooking up a sequel. Now we're all just sitting around waiting for The Avengers 🙂.

The only good parts are how much it looks like the comic and the hot British actress. Everything else sucks, even for a mindless summer blockbuster.

Captain America: The First Avenger deserves better
