The "Ghost Rider" saga is keeping the engine revving!

So, get this—Columbia Pictures is officially moving forward with a sequel to "Ghost Rider," and they're already in talks to bring back the legend himself, Nicolas Cage.

The plan is to have directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor at the helm, with a script being worked on by Scott Gimpor and Seth Hoffman based on a story by David S. Goyer.

If you need a refresher, the first flick followed young biker Johnny Blaze, who basically makes a deal with the devil to save the people he loves, right? It’s all based on that awesome "Ghost Rider" comic. And hey, let's not forget that this action-packed supernatural ride actually pulled in a cool $229 million back in 2007! Just a heads-up though, Eva Mendes won't be returning for this next chapter.

Production is slated to kick off this fall.



Back on February 9, 2007, Marvel producer Avi Arad announced the development of Ghost Rider 2 during a big press event. Even Peter Fonda mentioned how much he'd love to step back into the role of Mephistopheles! Then, in early December, Nicolas Cage also has expressed interest to return in the lead role as Ghost Rider. Not long after that, he gave an interview saying he was really itching for a darker vibe for the story, joking, "He's not eating jelly beans anymore; he's getting drunk." He even hinted that the movie could use some fresh, brand-new villains to shake things up.

Fast forward to a September 2008 interview, where Nicolas Cage informed IGN that Columbia has taken meetings to get this sequel off the ground. Cage even dropped some hints about the plot, suggesting Ghost Rider may end up in Europe on behalf of the church, having story elements very much in the zeitgeist, like Da Vinci Code. By February 2009, word on the street was that Columbia Pictures had officially greenlit the sequel, with Cage set to reprise his iconic role while the studio hunted for the right writers. Then, on September 23, 2009, news broke that David S. Goyer signed on to pen the script. Goyer chatted with MTV about the project, explaining that the story picks up eight years after the first movie wrapped and expressing his hope to start shooting by 2010. The sequel, titled Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, will be produced by Mike de Luc and will screen in PG-13. Finally, on June 14, 2010, it was all confirmed: Nicolas Cage will return and Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor are in negotiations to direct.

To movie was absolutely abysmal and nonsensical; I honestly couldn't even manage to sit through the whole thing. Consequently, I have no intention of bothering with a sequel..

Personally, I found the first installment to be quite a decent watch... I mean, it was genuinely entertaining—though obviously, we aren't calling it some sort of cinematic masterpiece, but it certainly holds its own as a fun ride...

The first one was really solid. My biggest issue was seeing Cage in that role because I just couldn't picture him there, but in the end, it turned out to be a good movie....

Man, I’m right there with you! It was a fun ride, definitely a good way to pass the time, even if it wasn't anything groundbreaking, you know? And look, I don't hate Cage at all, it's just that he didn't feel like the perfect fit for this specific part—I mean, wouldn't someone like Christian Bale have been interesting to see instead? But, you gotta give it to him, Cage actually managed to pull it off and really lean into the character.

I'm really crossing my fingers that the sequel steps things up and beats the first one! Wouldn't it be wild if they shook things up with the casting for a change? Imagine if they brought in someone like Christian Bale or maybe Kate Beckinsale or even Charlize Theron to lead the charge? Anyway, if you're wondering about my take on the original, I'd say it was a 4/10.

Fair enough. I agree a change could happen, but let's not go with Bale😁. The guy is already Batman and John Connor; he's done plenty of roles lately and might be overexposed. I just hope Worthington doesn't get a part because he's a joke👎👎

If we are truly suggesting that Ghost Rider represents the final flicker of hope for all of humanity, then I suppose we might as well just call it Sam W., because honestly, anything short of being the absolute last stand for our species wouldn't even constitute a real challenge for him.

I've only seen Terminator Salvation, but I heard he was throwing his back out in the other movies too. Would he even be able to save the world at that point?😁I don't know. To me, he’s just one of those stuck-up actors who keeps a completely blank expression whether he's laughing or crying. I'm just not a fan.

Honestly, who even cares? Just get it in my hands already! 😁

I mean, seriously, does it even matter if it’s a direct sequel or not? I really don't care about that part. My only real hope is that they actually put in the work to make it better than the first one, which—let's face it—wasn't exactly a masterpiece.
Maybe it wouldn't be such a bad idea to lean harder into the horror side of things and dial back the action a bit, or maybe just go full horror and skip the action entirely? Wouldn't that be wild?

It’s actually been pushed back to 2012, so we're looking at a release date of February 17, 2012 (USA).

Oh, man, I am seriously excited about this! I thought the first one was absolutely fantastic, and now I’m just dying to see where they take the sequel. I actually caught the teaser for this at Comic-Con when they totally surprised Nicolas Cage 😬

The first trailer is finally out.

There are plenty of websites out there filled with free amateur scripts that aren't even worth a glance, just sitting there gathering digital dust while this kind of garbage gets filmed. It's sad.

It feels way closer to the original comic. Didn't they say this was basically a reboot since they weren't thrilled with the first one?

The trailer is pretty cool—I'm really digging the locations, especially that desert scenery. And honestly, the whole vibe while he's writing is just neat.
